BOYS' SOCCER: Norton, Seekonk advance in Div. 3

TAUNTON - Keegan Campbell scored a pair of goals on partial breakaways to send the Norton High School boys' soccer team past the preliminary round of the MIAA Division 3-South Tournament, Norton ousting 17th-seeded Mashpee on Friday afternoon by a 2-0 count in a match played at Taunton High School.

The victory sends the 16th-seeded Lancers (9-6-4) into a first-round match at top-seeded Harwich (17-0-1) Sunday afternoon (1).

Norton goalie Pat Hillman had to make just two saves for the shutout, the Lancer midfield congregation of Eric Silvestri, Mike Kelly and Kolin Campbell keeping Mashpee well outside the penalty box area.

"Our midfield did very well, we controlled the middle of the field," said Norton coach Eric Greene. The Lancers created 12 shots on goal and four corner kicks.

Keegan Campbell put the Lancers ahead at 16:29, taking a through ball from brother Kolin Campbell and lofting it over the head of the on-charging Mashpee goalkeeper. Similarly scored was Keegan's second goal, that 13 minutes into the second half, this time Kelly assisting.

"Once we settled down we were fine," added Greene of the first game jitters, not to mention playing on a neutral surface. "We had some good scoring chances through the second half - it was our first match and we're still a young team."

Seekonk 4, Old Colony 0

ROCHESTER - Mike DaSilva and Sam Martin each supplied a goal and an assist during a four-goal, second-half surge which carried the Warriors past Old Colony in the preliminary round of the MIAA Division 3-South Sectional.

DaSilva scored what proved to be the match-winner for Seekonk in the 43rd minute and later set up Martin for the fourth Warrior goal in the 35th minute. Zach Caron totaled merely five saves in goal for the shutout, but the fuel for Seekonk's victory was supplied by stopper Andrew Braunsdorf who controlled the Warrior side of the field.

The victory sends No. 23 seeded Seekonk (8-7-4) to No. 7 seeded Cardinal Spellman for a 3 p.m., first-round match on Sunday.

Seekonk took control of the outcome by scoring twice within the first five minutes of the second half. "The first one kind of deflated them," said Seekonk coach Jeff Creamer.

The second Warrior tally, in the fifth minute by Josh Rainho sent a clear message to Old Colony. Martin set up the score with a throw-in.

Dan Huling set up DaSilva's match winning, sending the ball into the penalty box area, where the Seekonk senior midfielder beat an Old Colony defender on a partial breakaway. Jason Rego netted the third Seekonk goal, in the 30th minute, a nifty 18-yard drive to the top right corner of the net off of a feed from Edgar Lopez.

"The kids were obviously nervous playing a first round match and going to their field," added Creamer. "Then we started off slowly too," he said of the scoreless first half. "We had more chances, we pressured them."

Duxbury 2, King Philip 0

WRENTHAM - In a Division 2-South Sectional first-round game, the Warriors were upset at home by 11th-seeded Duxbury.

The Warriors, who entered the tournament as the sixth seed, finish up at 13-5-1 overall.

Duxbury, now 13-6, advances to the quarterfinals and awaits the winner of today's Apponequet-Hopkinton winner.
