North Midget A team advances to State Championship

WALPOLE - The North Attleboro Midget A team stunned defending state champion S.W.S Chiefs, 5-4 in overtime, Friday night at Walpole's Iorio Arena to win the district championship and advance to the State playoffs.

North got off to a quick start when Michael McTernan took a nifty pass from Brendan McKenna to put North up by one.

However, S.W.S would show why they were state champs by scoring three straight goals halfway through the second period. But McTernan would put North right back in it by scoring an electrifying end-to-end goal to make it 3-2 at the end of the second period.

At the beginning of the third period, leading scorer Brendan McKenna converted a pass by freshman Billy McAuliffe to tie things at 3-all. S.W.S got the lead back two minutes later on the power play to again reclaim the lead.

North wasn't rattled as McAuliffe would again tie things with great work and passing among linesmen McKenna and McTernan with six minutes remaining in regulation. In the last six minutes of the third period S.W.S would assault the N.A end of the ice except freshman netminder Stephane Muniur would hold the fort with eight spectacular saves to keep it tied at four at the end of regulation In overtime the pace of the game was no different than the rest of the game, both teams would go up and down with three chances until senior defensemen Tommy McAuliffe would steal the puck inside the apposing blue line and ripped off a wrist shot top shelf for the North Attleboro win.
