White Hawks win title

On a fall morning in West Warwick, the South Attleboro Mitey Mite White team met the Fairlawn Cardinals for the second time this season. This time, however, it was for the championship of the Blackstone Valley League.

While Fairlawn remained undefeated throughout the season and had beaten South Attleboro in Week 2, the White Hawks showed the mettle that they have shown all year, and beat the Cardinals 28-26 for the state championship.

With the White Hawks down two touchdowns in the first half, the situation began to look bleak until quarterback Tyler Koppy connected on a huge momentum-shifting pass that kept a crucial drive alive and allowed the White Hawks to put their first points on the board with another completion from Koppy to Mitch Daniel.

Daniel returned the favor by passing to Koppy for the point after conversion. But the White Hawks were not done, with Rachon Santos adding a second touchdown to move into the lead, and Daniel running in the conversion to make it 14-13 White Hawks at the half.

Early in the second half, it was Daniel again with a terrfic outside run for the White Hawks third touchdown of the day with the conversion being run in by Daniel on the QB keeper. But Fairlawn continued to keep pace, adding a score of their own and making it 21-20. Finally, when it counted the most, Rachon Santos took an inside handoff, turned it outside and ran it 25 yards for the touchdown, essentially ending the day for the Cardinals after the White Hawks were able to convert. Fairlawn drove the length of the field and scored, but were unable to convert on the extra point and time ran out on Fairlawn's day as the White Hawks were able to kneel for the last play of the game, icing the championship.

Prior to that game, though, the two South Attleboro White Hawks Mitey Mite teams met for a chance at the Super Bowl. In a game that was eerily similar to their first meeting of the season, Mitey Mite White prevailed 6-0 to advance to the showdown with the Cardinals.

Mitey Mite Red played very well on defense with Sam Corrado, Justin Cote and Isaac Vargas all making big tackles. With Chris Dam and Matt Marguerite both sacking the Mitey Mite White QB tandem numerous times, Red was always within inches of taking over. While the offense could not put the points on the board for Red, QB Tyler McGovern completed a nice 10 yard pass to Steve Hamerski and Ethan Hardy played well at the center position.

With points very hard to generate for either squad, it was a Daniel 46 yard run that put the only points on the board for the game. Splitting time at QB with Koppy, who also had a circus type interception, Daniel, Santos and Aidan McKenna all toted the ball for White.

The defense, however, was once again the story for Mitey Mite White who tossed their second consecutive shutout in the playoffs. Jason and Justin Bobola, Zach Currier, Dalton Johnson, Desmond Woodson, Jim Burke, Adam Garcia Daniel, Koppy, Santos and McKenna kept Red on the heels by consistently knocking down passes and putting tremendous pressure up front, Garcia making a huge sack the essentially ended the game by pinning Red back and turning the ball over on downs where White was able to take a knee to close out the game.

The Junior PeeWee team played the West Warwick Steelers and, while they battled gamely, the Steelers were a little too much to handle today.
