Thanks for fitting tribute to firefighter

To the editor:

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, I attended the funeral for Attleboro Firefighter Steven Mayer. Firefighter Mayer died last week after a long courageous battle with cancer. I had the honor and privilege of working with Firefighter Mayer for over 20 years and he was a great asset to the Attleboro Fire Department.

I would like to take this oppurtinuty to recognize the efforts of Fire Chief Ronald Churchill, Attleboro Firefighters Local 848, the Attleboro Police Department, and many surrounding fire departments for the professional job everyone did to honor Firefighter Mayer. His funeral was a wonderful tribute to a man who loved being a firefighter and loved the City of Attleboro. Many compliments were voiced by the attending public. All who participated and contributed should be very proud of the exemplary way this tribute was conducted

Time to rein in school

spending in Seekonk

To the editor:

I would like to offer a big, heartfelt "thank you" to all the Seekonk taxpayers.

Thank you for everything you are doing to turn around Seekonk. I know how hard you have been working. However, today I have an additional - very important-message.

School officials are crying poverty, claiming their budget is squeezed and they need the money. Tough luck. Welcome to the club. The budgets of working families and businesses in Seekonk have been squeezed also.

School spending habits prove that they have plenty of money in their budget. The taxpayers have one simple message for school officials: No more.

With troubled economic times, the school department needs to stop spending money like a drunken sailor. I have seen the school department bills. In addition, you must not refuse to believe that it is costing the Seekonk taxpayer this much money to maintain the schools.

Clearly, the budget should have been a wakeup call. Taxpayers want the school budgets published in more detail and in common business terms. The taxpayers need to know what they are getting. "Administrative salaries and supplies" is one line item published once a year. Set the example from the top down and the message will be clear. Remember, with the exception of the administration, the school teachers, nurses, psychologists, aides work 180 days versus approximately 250 days most taxpayers work. Shame on us if we let this continue. It just makes me think it is yet another example of poor fiscal management and a lack of accountability.

Thank you to all the voters who took the time to show their support. Without all of you, this would not have been possible.
