Mansfield suspends officer

MANSFIELD - A police officer accused of driving drunk and leaving the scene of two accidents has been suspended without pay for at least one year.

Patrolman William Kelly was suspended by Police Chief Arthur O'Neill following a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday.

"It was an unfortunate and embarrassing incident for the police department," O'Neill said.

Kelly had been on paid administrative leave following an incident that occurred shortly after midnight on Oct. 11. Police allege Kelly sideswiped a parked car in front of the fire station at 291 North Main St. and left the scene before hitting a fire hydrant in front of 375 West St.

Police said they followed skid marks from the accident scene to the West Village apartment complex at 792 West St., about two miles away, where Kelly's truck was found to have substantial damage. No injuries were reported in either accident.

Kelly was not located until much later that morning and did not answer his door, police said. He was issued a citation, but was not arrested.

Kelly was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving to endanger and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in property damage.

He has appealed the charges and has a show-cause hearing scheduled in Attleboro District Court on Thursday.

Neither Kelly nor his lawyer could be reached by The Sun Chronicle for comment Tuesday.

The suspension took effect immediately and Kelly will be eligible to return to the force in one year, provided he meets requirements set forth by O'Neill, which the chief did not wish to discuss publicly.

"We feel we've handled it properly and are ready to move on from here," O'Neill said.

" tahraan - your sympathy goes out to the officer? Are you kidding me? Do you know something we don't about the case? Was he handcuffed and made to drink large amounts of alcohol and then forced, at gunpoint, to drive and crash into numerous things? Yes, I feel awfully sorry for this public servant . . .

sorry for the rant and sarcasm, but that had to be the most intelligence-lacking post I've read. "

" Isn't refusal to take a breathalyzer an automatic loss of license in MA? The original article said he refused, is he still driving? "

" patrolman kelly has appealed his case to a show-cause hearing in attleboro district court. i just hope that the sun chronicle has a follow up on this case on friday, the day after the appeal-hearing. as i stated earlier, this case show have gone to court in the first place! i stated that every citzen, should have their day in court, police officer, or anyone else! "

" why didn't this officer go to court like all citzens do? plead his case, with his lawyer present, and take the punishment that a judge would give out. is there a double standard here? his actions were not law obideing by any means. as a law enforcement officer, he is sworn to unhold the law, even for himself. no one is above the law, ya, right! no loss of license to drive?leaving the scene of two accidents, and possible dui? "

" Cops aren't nothing but gangs with a badge! They think they are so special and and have privileges above and beyond every other citizen. How many times we have seen cops turn on the blues to beat traffic and have no where to go? Cops get discounts when going places like clubs etc. They are treated like the mafia. Makes me sick! Now they are just getting sloppy at there own game. Give me $40 an hour to stand in a street and still not direct traffic. Todays cops are so crooked. Do as I say not as I do should be the motto on each vehicle they drive like idiots in! "

" so does that mean he has to pay back what they paid him while waiting to prove him quilty??? I wouldn't be paid my wage if I couldn't go to work. Maybe I should get a town job,... "

" He's lucky they did not take his badge and the privilege to serve away from him. I hope this will be a lesson for the rest of the police officers in the area. We all make mistakes but this one could have killed someone. "

" Good, this guy deserves the suspension. He should be thankful he didn't kill anyone on the road.

I see this happnened on N Main St. Perhaps Casey O'Connor's overserved another patron. "
