Mansfield recycling proving a hit

MANSFIELD - The town's new single-stream recycling system is proving to a big success, according to the town's public works director.

Residents recycled 104 more tons from August to October than they did in the same period last year, Lee Azinheira told selectmen.

The increased recycling has led the town to dispose of 94 fewer tons of trash in the three-month period than last year.

"We're happy with the way it's going," Azinheira said. "People are recycling more and we're saving money because we have to pay to dispose of less trash."

Azinheira said the town has saved $6,500 from the trash reduction, so far.

The single-stream program, approved by town meeting voters in May, kicked off this summer when the DPW delivered new, 64-gallon containers to residents. The containers, similar to those used for trash, allow residents to put all recyclables together with sorting taking place at a separate facility.

Many area towns, including North Attleboro and Plainville, also use a single-stream recycling system.
