ZUCK: Draw battle plan to protect right to complain

Election Day is this Tuesday, folks! That means you have only two days left to plan your strategy. But why, you ask, do you need a strategy?

Unfortunately, there are plenty of reasons not to vote - and they all tend to pop up on Election Day. These reasons will do whatever they can to keep you from the polls.

On Election Day, your child will wake up feeling sick and you won't have time to hit the voting booth before work. Or your spouse will have forgotten to put gas in the car and it's on "E." Or you'll sleep through your alarm and be an hour late to start your day. For these reasons and more, you need a fool-proof plan to get yourself to your designated polling place before it closes.

Maybe you're planning on voting during your lunch break - but this is the Tuesday when your co-workers are throwing Carl his birthday party and you simply can't miss that. Or maybe there's a staff meeting before lunch and your long-winded boss keeps everyone at the meeting with an uninspired pep talk about how the company is going to weather the storm, leaving you no time to vote.

Perhaps your plan of attack is to vote after work. But mark my words - this will be the day that you'll get a flat tire or you'll drop your keys in the toilet or you'll be abducted by aliens and returned to Earth after the polls close. For all the reasons why you might not be able to cast your ballot, the good news is that there are even more reasons why it's absolutely vital that you do vote. There's the state of the economy. Or the wars we're fighting. The healthcare system. Abortion. Taxes. The future of "Saturday Night Live." Whatever stance you take on these issues, it's important that your opinion finds its way into the ballot box.

But all of this is mere hogwash when you compare it to the best, the most important, the most motivating reason to vote. Why take the time and make the effort to get to your polling place on Tuesday? Why expend the fuel, why wait in line, why trouble your brain with making a decision? Because you're doing this for the right to complain!

When the new president and vice president are sworn into office next January, undoubtedly they will soon disappoint you. Regardless of whether you voted for the eventual winner or the eventual loser, Democrat or Republican or Other, the act of casting that ballot grants you the right to shout from the rooftops about how frustrated you are with our country's leader.

"I can't believe this guy won," you can say, "I voted for the other guy."

Or, "This guy isn't living up to his promises - he's not getting my vote next time!"

Either way, be sure to cast your ballot on Tuesday. If not -if you don't participate in our democratic process, as flawed as it may be - you'll lose the ability (in my book, at least) to rightfully complain about our eventual president. So vote on Tuesday, my fellow Americans! Vote for the right to complain for four more years!

BILL ZUCK is never finished complaining; he will definitely be voting on Tuesday. You can reach him at wcz78@yahoo.com.
