GOBIS: Dust up at NAHS

An ongoing project to replace the stone dust infield at the North Attleboro High School Softball Field (Kelly Field) is coming to a successful conclusion. The old infield is being replaced by a new clay infield and the field has been completely laser re-graded under the direction of Attleboro's Denny Brolin, the former Gillette Stadium and McCoy Stadium field specialist who now operates Sports Turf Specialties out of Plainville. The combined effort to fund this project has been led by a group called NARSA (North Attleboro Recreation Softball Association) which has run a summer girls softball tournament in town each of the past three summers along with North Attleboro Park and Recreation Dept. director Steve Carvalho. The North Attleboro School Dept., under the guidance of Facilities Manager Kyle Kummer and Athletic Director Paul Sullivan, also were instrumental.

- Former North Attleboro High distance runner and reigning NCAA Division III All-American Stephanie McNamara, a sophomore at Tufts University, will be at Hanover College in Indiana for the NCAA Division III National Cross Country Meet again. A 30th place finisher last year, McNamara took fourth place in the regional qualifier last weekend at Mt. Greylock High in Williamstown, covering the 6-kilometer course in 23:01. Prior to that, McNamara took second place at the NASCAC Championship Meet, a 22:17 time on the 6K course.

- Down the road at Brandeis University, former Dighton-Rehoboth High soccer star Tiffany Pacheco was the Judges' leading scorer with eight goals and four assists, the sophomore striker being an honorable mention pick to the University Athletic Association team.

- Bishop Feehan High soccer star Dan Galvin and King Philip High Warrior whiz kid Joel Diamand are both heading to Tampa, Fla. this weekend with the Cape Cod Crusaders under-17 team for the national Super-Y tournament.

- Wrentham's Andrew Glass scored his first career goal in a Boston University Terrier hockey uniform against Northeastern, the freshman forward having played in four of nine games thus far. Glass played at Noble & Greenough and with the Junior Bruins of the ECHL, while being a seventh round draft pick of the NHL Washington Capitals.

- The Greg Gagne era of baseball at Bishop Feehan has ended with the former Somerset High, Minnesota Twin and Red Sox infielder electing to resign.

- Norton High senior left tackle Chris Hamel was the top vote-getter among the offensive linemen selected to the All Tri-Valley League team. The Lancers claimed the TVL MVP in senior running back Sean Ryan and the TVL Defensive Player of the Year in senior linebacker Ricky Travers.

- Dighton-Rehoboth High field hockey coach Roberta Cordeiro and junior forward Jenna Rocha discovered last week that the Falcon attacker played half the season with a femur stress fracture and is now on crutches.

- "He's so solid, all around," said Foxboro High boys' soccer coach Pat Nash of senior midfielder Tim Loftus. "He's so very dependable, plus he's a great role model."

- Seekonk High swimming coach Joe Gerth has high hopes for sophomore Jacki Johnson at the MIAA State Meet Sunday at Wellesley College. Johnson clocked a 2:04 in the 200 freestyle at the South Sectionals and the next day was timed at 2:02 at a Seacoast Meet at the Mayers Natatorium.

- At the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship Golf Tournament, former Dighton-Rehoboth Falcon Steve LeDonne finished eighth overall as his Johnson & Wales club won the team title. AAGA Open top 20 finisher Derek Jensen finished sixth overall (at 157) and North Attleboro's Chad Lareau was 14th (at 167) for R.I. College in the tourney.

- Former Mansfield High Hornet Jill Johnson no sooner had completed her sophomore soccer season at Framingham State, than she was on the floor for the Rams' hoop team, having her second career double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds to go along with five steals) in an 11-point loss to New England College.

- At the breakup dinner for Melissa Bordieri's Foxboro High field hockey team, she presented Warrior midfielder Heather O'Rourke with quite a keepsake - a ball that she shattered by making a hit in the season finale against King Philip, "something that I had never, ever seen in my years playing in high school (Mansfield), college (Northeastern) or coaching."

- "He was awesome, he would completely shut down forwards," offered King Philip High boys' soccer coach Kip Lewis of senior outside left back Dan Kelly, often overlooked, but never underestimated.

- "You never notice her on the field," said Mansfield High girls' soccer coach Kevin Smith of sophomore center midfielder Katie Dempsey of her understated role in transition.

- Believe it or not Friar fans, but if you click to the PC Web site and travel to the Friar Auction site, you can bid on a game-worn jersey by Attleboro High legend Leland Anderson.

- Former Seekonk High sharpshooter Tyler Patch got on the floor for 19 minutes (having a basket and a rebound) off the bench for the Keene (N.H.) State Owls in an 11-point loss to Williams.

- At the breakup dinner for coach Steve Nelson's North Attleboro High School golf Team, senior co-captains Greg Reddington and Ryan Doherty received their 2008 Hockomock League All-Star Team and co-MVP awards.

- Kristen Mitchell of Rehoboth, a senior at Bay View Academy in East Providence, inked an NCAA letter of intent to play softball at Lehigh, having batted .469 as a junior in leading her team to the Division 1 state title.
