Four bridges in Attleboro and one in Rehoboth would be repaired or replaced by 2013 under a fast-track program announced by Gov. Deval Patrick.
Patrick said he is accelerating work on scores of bridges across the state under the $3 billion plan. Construction is being speeded up by borrowing the money against promises of future federal aid.
The first locally to benefit from the program would be two Attleboro bridges on Interstate 95 - one over Route 1 and the other over Route 1A.
Klark Jessen, a spokesman for the state, said the $3.7 million in repairs could start this spring.
The state also was to do $3.3 million in repairs to a bridge over the Bungay River on North Main Street in Attleboro, starting in the spring of 2010.
The largest local project on the state list is the long-awaited $9.5 million rehabilitation of the Olive Street bridge over the railroad tracks in Attleboro, scheduled for 2011. In Rehoboth, a bridge over the Palmer River on Route 6 will receive $2 million worth of repairs in 2013.
The Patrick administration has announced plans for an eight-year, $3 billion program aimed at reducing by 250 the number of structurally deficit bridges in the state.
The state said it has 543 structurally deficient bridges, and without quick action the number will rise to 700 in eight years.
"This plan is very much in keeping with our larger proposal to create a safe, efficient and cost effective transportation system in the commonwealth," Patrick said in a news release.
"I am confident we are on course to reverse decades of neglect, set the state's transportation priorities straight, and, ultimately, deliver the first-rate services our citizens expect and deserve," he said.
