Edward Calhoun Sr., 91

MANSFIELD
- Edward H. Calhoun Sr., 91, a lifelong resident of Mansfield, died peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Marguerite L. (Monroe) Calhoun, who passed away on Nov. 12, 2008. Mr. and Mrs. Calhoun were wed on Nov. 17, 1945.

Born at the family homestead on Mill Street in East Mansfield on Dec. 1, 1917, he was a son of the late Thomas and Alice (Faria) Calhoun.

He was educated in Mansfield public schools and was a 1935 graduate of Mansfield High School. During World War II, Ed proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He was the recipient of the Silver Star commemorating his participation in five major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge and Day 6 of D-Day. He served under the command of General George Patton.

Before retiring, Mr. Calhoun had worked at the former Cleveland Twist Drill Co. in Mansfield for 17 years where he was employed as a tap inspector.

Ed enjoyed trips to Cape Cod and walking on the beaches in Dennis. He traveled to Europe, where he was able to retrace his war steps. He enjoyed tending to his annual vegetable gardens and had the good fortune to enjoy 27 years of a healthy retirement.

He is survived by his devoted children, Dorothy A. Souza and her husband Tony of Mansfield, Edward H. Calhoun Jr. of Mashpee and Brian M. Calhoun of Hull. Also surviving are his cherished grandchildren: Patricia S. Ransom and her husband Dale of Norton, Paula J. Souza of Bridgewater, and Edward H. Calhoun III and Erin M. Calhoun, both of Mashpee; his loving great-granddaughters Lauren Ransom and Erica Ransom, both of Norton; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Florence Cooney, Alice Hoag, Robert Calhoun and Francis Calhoun.

Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield. Burial with military honors will be held at a later date in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7 prior to the funeral services beginning at 3 p.m. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.

Mary Ann Magina, 81

ATTLEBORO - Mary Ann (Pedro) Magina, 81, of Lindsey Street, Attleboro, died on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro following a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Anthony Santos Magina Jr., to whom she was married on Sept. 27, 1952 and who died on Aug. 6, 2008.

Born in East Providence, R.I. on April 21, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Manuel C. and Mary Pedro, who had immigrated to the United States from their native Portugal. She was raised and educated in Rhode Island, and when reaching the eighth grade, Mrs. Magina left school to assist in the care of her family following her father suffering a stroke. She later lived in Taunton prior to moving to Orange Street in Attleboro, where the couple started their family and resided prior to building a home on Lindsey Street in Attleboro, where she had lived for more than 50 years. She was a devoted and dedicated homemaker to her husband and children, and in later years treasured the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Magina was a longtime parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Attleboro. For many years, she volunteered her time and skills as a reading teacher at St. John's School in Attleboro.

A woman of creative talents, her family recalls with fondness and love her ability to sew, crochet and knit all types of items, including sweaters, clothing and afghans that she frequently made with tenderness and love for family, friends and charity.

An ardent bird watcher, Mrs. Magina was particularly fond of cardinals.

She leaves a son, Robert A. Magina and his wife Janet B. (Bishop) Magina of Plainville; a daughter, Deborah M. White of Tiverton, R.I.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Raposa of Rehoboth and several nieces and nephews.

She was the twin sister of the late Francis Pedro.

Family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Friday, Dec. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Commonwealth Chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Ave. (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, 3/4 mile on left), Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro.

Those in need of a ride to visitation may simply call the funeral home at 508-695-0200 to make an advance reservation for such gratis local transportation.

A children's room will be available during visitation.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main St. (Route 152), Attleboro with the Rev. Richard Roy, pastor, officiating. There will be no funeral cortege leaving from the funeral home prior to the funeral Mass.

Burial will follow in the family lot in St. John's Cemetery, West Street, Attleboro.

Following cemetery services, the family will invite extended family members and friends for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at a location to be announced.

Carole Marie MacAulay, 73

FOXBORO - Carole Marie MacAulay, 73, died on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 at her daughter's home in Franklin after a long battle with cancer. She was the daughter of the late Angus and Muriel (Wadman) MacDonald.

Carole was born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada on Dec. 13, 1934 and was a graduate of Morrison High School in Glace Bay, Class of 1953. She married her husband Donald in Glace Bay on Jan. 29, 1954. Carole and Donald raised their family in Brookline, where they resided for over 40 years.

Carole worked as a data entry technician for Sears Catalog Stores in Boston until retiring in 1990.

She was a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed square dancing with her husband. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

She was the beloved wife of Donald C. MacAulay; the loving mother of Kirk MacAulay and his wife Alice of Norfolk and Luanne MacAulay of Franklin; the devoted grandmother of Kelsey, Nicole and Kyle MacAulay of Norfolk; the sister of Anita Fowler of Roslindale and Eleanor Lewis of Lockport, Cape Breton; and is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend calling hours on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Roberts & Sons Funeral Home, 30 South St., Foxboro.

A funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Bethany Congregational Church, 3 Rockhill St., Foxboro. Interment will follow at Rock Hill Cemetery in Foxboro.
