ATTLEBORO - One of the alleged con artists arrested in a TV sale scam in North Attleboro was freed on bail and another was ordered held in jail after pleading innocent Friday in Attleboro District Court.
Police say Anthony T. DaCosta, 21, and Robert Borelli, 23, both of Woburn, were arrested in a sting by undercover detectives posing as a customer in the alleged flim-flam in the parking lot of Sears at the Emerald Square mall.
Borelli was free after posting $500 cash while DaCosta was ordered held in jail on $2,500 cash bail.
Police are seeking a third individual they say is the mastermind of the scam.
The suspects allegedly conspired to sell eight "overstocked" 60-inch Plasma TVs for $5,000 to an undercover police officer in the parking lot outside Sears. The televisions sell for $5,000 each.
Police said the suspects never intended to sell actual product but only to rip off prospective customers by taking their money and giving them only a fictitious invoice before fleeing.
Police say people should be wary of such offers.
During the arraignment of the suspects, Judge Gregory L. Phillips also urged caution. "There no such thing as a free lunch," Phillips said
