ATTLEBOROThe 2008 Christmas Is For Kids gift drive for area needy children came to a successful close on Tuesday.
"All of the kids will be well taken care of," said Kelly Fox, president of Christmas Is For Kids, the 25th annual campaign run by the Attleboro Area Council for Children. "It's great!"
Fox said that 45 volunteers were working "straight out" to pull things together on Tuesday, the last night of the drive.
Another six children were added to the list on Tuesday, making a total of 726 kids served. Fox said the drive would have continued to add children if more requests had come in.
"I had to stop we've just run out of time," she said.
Fox had several "elf" shoppers out on Tuesday night to fill in last-minute needed items.
"We've had people popping in to ask what we need, and they've gone out to buy and have brought the things back here," Fox said.
That, she said, made it a lot easier to ensure that each child will have a smile on Christmas.
"Depending on their budget, whether it's $40 or $400, people are really coming together to help," Fox said.
"It wasn't until last night that we knew that this was going to work," Fox said, noting that the volunteers worked late on Tuesday.
They will be back at the drop-off center at 64 Water St. this evening also, to set up for Thursday, when parents of children receiving gifts will be able to pick them up. Though not officially open on Wednesday, they will accept last minute drop-offs from 5 to 8 p.m., which will be distributed to children on the list.
