Attleboro veteran charged with tackling Pats linebacker Junior Seau

FOXBORO - An Iraq war veteran from Attleboro pleaded not guilty in Wrentham District Court today to tackling New England Patriots linebacker Junior Seau during Sunday's game at Gillette Stadium.

Todd Kobus, 31, of 189 Clifton St. "jumped over the wall" separating the stands from the field "and he proceeded to tackle" Seau, Foxboro Deputy Police Chief John Chandler said. The wall is 6 or 7 feet high, Chandler said.

The incident happened during the fourth quarter of Sunday's 47-7 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Police arrested Kobus and charged him with trespassing and assault and battery. Chandler said "we didn't ask" why Kobus allegedly attacked Seau.

Kobus was released on personal recognizance after being arraigned. Judge Warren Powers continued the case until Feb. 17 for a pre-trial hearing, according to the clerk magistrate's office.

Patriots spokesman Stacey James said the team has revoked the ticket Kobus used.
The Sun Chronicle is trying to reach Kobus' attorney, John Gaffney Jr. of Dedham.

The newspaper profiled Kobus in a Jan. 21, 2007, story about Iraq veterans returning to civilian life.

At that time, Kobus, a National Guard intelligence specialist, was assigned to the 26th Brigade Combat team at Fort Devens. He also was a senior software engineer at Watters Inc.

He previously spent most of a year in Kuwait and Iraq with the Rehoboth-based 42nd Division Artillery, which was then deactivated.

Kobus became known locally for a military blog he wrote, lostiniraq.com. The site was packed with pictures, videos and irreverent humor, and was widely read among the military and their families.

Kobus told The Sun Chronicle in 2007 that after 18 months away from home, incidental pleasures such as a cup of Dunkin' Donuts coffee and driving his own car took on special meaning.

"It took a little longer than I expected to settle back into the routine, but I'm happy the way my life is going now," Kobus said at the time.

Still, Kobus said he was glad he went to Iraq, and called the time he spent together with his fellow soldiers "one of the best experiences I've had in my life."

He said he was not anxious to be deployed again, only because it would take more time away from his civilian life and career.

The Attleboro resident spoke to students at Case High School in Swansea in 2007 about his experiences.

And we wonder why our children are the way they are and the drinking problems getted passed from one generation to the next - hannalynne encourages this and will teach her children to look up to Todd and his actions. God help us all. "

" How is a Monday story, about an idiot still the lead? Is the newsroom already closed for Christmas? In fact there are a number of retread stories on here lately, some are updates just lengthened by repeating and rehash of old reporting.

The reason they don't show this type of activity on broadcast TV is to not give the fool an opportunity for 'fame'. But the SC has done this very well for him. Let it go, and report on true news, I'm sure there are any number of good news stories you can find. "

" FOXRES22, I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. My point was there should have been MORE details on the field.... Regarding the firefighters, the State Police let them drive right by them and do all the time. Waaaa Waaaaa we'd be here till next week, Waaaa Waaaa DO YOUR JOB ! Their to busy at Dunkin Donunts, Omega Pizza, or Christina's getting $5 meals....
A- These people are over served so Kraft can make money. Security call in a few drunks and they think that covers them. Think about it, these people are allowed to drink from 10:00 until about 3:00.
B- SIMPLE SOLUTION, Don't allow tailgating, if you get caught you lose your season ticket........

This guy being a vet has NOTHING to do with the incident, he just happens to be one, thats all... "

But come on...No one was hurt..Todd had a good time, Junior Seau was laughing about it, and now Todd has a great story to tell his kids someday. And Todd, if it weren't for people like you, there would be nothing for these people to blah blah blah about. And I sure am proud to know you! "

" This has nothing to do with a man who had too much to drink at a sporting event or the fact that he was a veteran. This comes down to the Security and tolerance of intoxicated individuals at the stadium. I worked for years at the stadium and after every game, I prayed that I would not be killed by one of the drunks leaving the game. My last day was when a drunk hit my new car in the parking lot while exiting. I stopped got out of my car and a state trooper told me to keep moving. I said, No this drunk just hit me. The trooper went over to the car took the drunk out and replaced him with the passenger who couldn't walk a straight line to the other side of the car. I asked how could you let this guy leave so drunk and the response. "Lady if we arrested every drunk person that leaves this stadium, we'd be here for weeks. End of story. "

" I for 1 never claimed to be perfect nor thought for a single moment that I never did or never will do anything I wasn't proud of. However, the fact that this bozo did something very stupid, likely while under the influence of alcohol, at a public sporting event makes him and the event more than open to public discussion and chastising. The 3 minutes it took to read the article and minute it took to write a comment could have been used to fix the domestic automaker debacle or reduced the unemployment level or held the banks accountable for their bailout money how?

They call it a public comment forum for a reason Chiman. If you are much too busy and have more important things to attend to, simply ignore and don't participate. What's so threatening to you about a blog and how people choose to spend their own time?

As for dogging the military, that's ridiculous for someone to do. The fact that he's a vet and went out and did this stupid thing has no connection at all. "

The economy is crap, thousands have no electricity, Bush just gave the Carmakers 17 billion of which in 3 months they can claim bankruptcy, Millions without jobs, The bailout for the banks arent even being tracked as to how its spent, and all you guys can come up with is a drunk guy who tackles a pro athlete during a game? Wow no wonder the world is in such dire straits!!! Now people are dogging this guy and the military? Why to many angels and saints in here that is for sure. Its nice to know that everyone here has there lives so together that they can slam guy for whatever? Too much Happy Xmas everyone. Again ........WOW!!!! "

" swtncute1981 - you're judging also, you just have a diffrent opinion. People do stupid things, you're right, but 60k of them stayed on the other side of the wall, only one was stupid enough to jump it. Maybe he's a good guy overall that made a bad choice; but he acted like an idiot and deserves to be judged. He's responsible for the mistakes he made; no different than if he had driven out of the stadium and hit someone. He's responsible for the outcome of his actions. obviously the outcome of this incident is not as severe as the example I just used, but he's accountable for his actions none the less.
As far as him being a vet, that's a non issue, being a vet doesn't have anything to do with what he did. "

swtncute1981 wrote on Dec 23, 2008 12:02 PM:

" I can't believe you guys are judging. Everyonce sometime or another has done something stupid. And those who have a prob and making comments about him being a VET should grow the hell up. Come on. VETS don't get off like you think they do. So he had a couple of drinks and did something foolish. It doesn't mean you have the right to bash him. Why don't you take a look at yourselves before you can judge someone else.... "

jose21 wrote on Dec 23, 2008 10:59 AM:

" Skeptic - the SC had a link to this clown because they had run a story on him in the past. I agree, the fact that he's a vetran has nothing to do with the story.
As for the Pats games, I go to a few every year, and I'll be the first to tell you that I drink heavily when I tailgate, as does pretty much everyone at the game. But there is a diffenece between getting drunk and being a complete idiot. Some people can actully get drunk and not act like a fool. There are over 60k fans that go to Pats games weekly, and only one has jumped the wall over the last couple years. This guy got lucky because he surprised Seau and he didn't cross paths with the wrong player. I can imagine if the offense was on the sideline and someone like Login Mankins was standing there, the guy would have been killed. In baseball, wen a fan jumps and touches another player, they get pumbled by both teams. This idiot could have been killed. "

Isn't it about time you made your mom and dad proud and achieved something of merit in your life. "

skeptic wrote on Dec 23, 2008 10:31 AM:

" If I may respectfully point out, Mr. Kobus did not go to court and claim any special treatment because he's a veteran. He was not in uniform at the time and is not on active duty. While what he did was stupid and deserving of a fine, he did it as just another civilian.
As for the inference that he has a problem, I know plenty of non-alcoholics who, after a couple of drinks, have done something they are ashamed of. Usually not on national TV but ashamed just the same.

I would also like to point out that it was the press, particularly the SC, that tried to infer a connection between his veteran status and his dumb stunt. "

hardhearted wrote on Dec 23, 2008 10:25 AM:

" If he does prison time for a stupid thing like this then there is no justice. Yes he should be fined and put on probation but he now has a season ticket holder angry at him.

Don't blame his military service, there are a lot of paper patriots out there who pull off a lot worse stunts.

BTW Mr Kobus, thanks for your service. A dumb stunt in civilian life doesn't eliminate your service to your country. "

" It really isn't anything new or shocking - stuff like this goes on at all Patriots games, it is what the Foxboro experience is all about. Doesn't bother me as I don't go as much as I used to and I had a few too. But it does bother me now when you bring your kids and they see these so-called adults acting like that. Sort of ruins the experience.

My memories of my 1st trip there or to Fenway or the the old Garden was all about the venue, the players, how cool it was to see something in person that I always saw on TV. Now, it seems, the experience is about having to ask your child to get up every minute so the fools down the row can get up to get his 12th beer.

Don't want to be a prude, but it is a bit disappointing to see the games turn into nothing more than a booze-fest that just so happens to include a professional sporting event as a backdrop. "

" He'll get off with a slap on his wrist BECAUSE he's a vet. This seems to negate the necessity to obey laws here at home. It's not right.
A non-vet would be charged and punished for the same thing.
Sure, I appreciate what the military does, but we have to remember that they voluntarily sign up for that job, no one forces them to. The job, then, should not give them the ticket to ignore laws. A worker at Wal-Mart can't use their employment as an excuse for breaking the law, why should the military do that and get away with it? "

" Alcohol-alcohol-alcohol, it's that simple. I bet this guy wouldn't have done this stupid act if he wasn't drinking. Answer me this, why is it ok to drink in your parking lot at Gillette Stadium, but if I were at McDonalds I couldn't? To many turned heads by the town of Foxboro when it comes to the stadium. I think Foxboro should adopt an open container law, if a season ticket holder is caught drinking in the lot, their tickets are revoked. The NFL talks a lot about cleaning up the games but money solves all problems..
Lastly, why are there so FEW Foxboro police officers on the field? I overheard a police officer this morning at Dunk's saying that the stadium has cut back drastically on their details. I bet the family of the two firefighters killed would like to know why! Even the media is afraid of Gillette Stadium. look and you will find the answers......... "
