NORTH ATTLEBORO - An alleged heroin addict held up a local man at knifepoint in a Route 1 ATM and forced him to drive to Attleboro.
An Attleboro man now faces kidnapping and armed robbery charges.
The victim, a 20-year-old North Attleboro man, told police that William Falke pointed a 12-inch kitchen knife at his stomach about noon Monday in the Bank of America ATM at the Stop & Shop supermarket on Route 1, Detective Lt. David Dawes said.
The victim, who was not hurt, had been making a deposit.
The victim said Falke told him "he was a heroin addict," Dawes said, and forced him to drive to the center of Attleboro.
Along the way, Falke, 47, of 29 Morey St., Apt. 3, in Attleboro, took the man's cell phone and called a Norton number, Dawes said.
The victim convinced Falke to return the phone but keep the battery.
The man dropped Falke off on a side street near Attleboro District Court, then reported the incident at North Attleboro police headquarters, Dawes said.
Attleboro police arrested Falke at his Morey Street residence about midnight based on information from Norton detectives.
Falke's call to Norton was "critical" because "it got Norton detectives involved and gave us the name of a possible suspect," Dawes said.
The victim identified Falke from a photo lineup.
Falke has a lengthy criminal record, Dawes said.
He was held overnight on $100,000 cash bail at the North Attleboro police station.
Judge David Turcotte ordered him held on $25,000 bail following his arraignment in Attleboro District Court, said Gregg Miliote, spokesman for Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter.
Turcotte continued the case until Jan. 13.
