Bail cut for accused coach

WALPOLE - Bail was reduced Wednesday for the former New England Patriot accused of having sex with a 15-year-old Walpole High School student.

In the meantime, Daniel Villa also might lose his wife and custody of their four children.

Joanne E. Villa filed for divorce Tuesday in Norfolk Probate and Family Court. She cited "an irretrievable breakdown" in the 18-year marriage, with "no hope of reconciliation," according to the divorce filing.

Dedham Superior Court Judge Barbara Dortch-Okara set bail for Villa Wednesday at $7,500, reduced from the $100,000 set on Tuesday, according to Kevin Bowe, spokesman for Norfolk County District Attorney William Keating.

Villa will remain in custody pending the installation of a GPS monitoring system, which should take at least five days, Bowe said. A hearing is scheduled Wednesday on the status of the monitor. Villa, 44, of Walpole, pleaded innocent Tuesday to three counts of statutory rape and three counts of enticing a minor. He is due back in court Jan. 7.

He is accused of having sex with one of his former basketball players.

Villa was Walpole High School's athletic director and football coach before resigning Dec. 23, when the allegations surfaced.

In the divorce filing, Joanne Villa seeks custody of the children and to keep the couple's Walpole home.
