Still no ID on woman killed by train in South Attleboro
ATTLEBORO - MBTA Transit Police on Sunday continued investigating why a New York-bound Amtrak train struck a woman at the South Attleboro commuter rail station, killing her, on Saturday.
The identity of the 37-year-old victim was not available Sunday. An MBTA spokesman could not be reached for comment.
Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said the woman "jumped" in front of the train, which was bound next for Providence, about 3:34 p.m. Saturday.
The train was traveling at close to 125 mph, the maximum speed on the tracks, Graham said. An MBTA police officer on Saturday had said the train was traveling at 50 to 60 mph.
Attleboro Police Chief Richard Pierce has said the woman's personal belongings, including a pocketbook, were found on the platform at the station, in the Bristol Place shopping plaza on Route 1A near the Pawtucket line. A pocketbook and a carry-on piece of luggage were taken by police to help identify the victim.
Graham said the 200 passengers on the train were moved to an Acela train.
The Amtrak train involved in the crash was delayed two hours, she said.
