MANSFIELD - A free railroad safety education forum is a go later this month on the heels of recent deaths on local train tracks.
The program will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 in the Mansfield Public Library conference room. The presentation will be by Ed O'Connor, state coordinator for Operation Lifesaver, a program sponsored by a coalition of railroad industry groups.
State Reps. Jay Barrows, R-Mansfield, and Betty Poirier, R-North Attleboro, are partnering up with Operation Lifesaver to sponsor this public awareness forum for the citizens of Foxboro, Mansfield and Norton to highlight safety tips at highway-rail grade crossings.
"We continue to have tragedies that occur on rail lines in and around our communities," Poirier said. "It is my hope that we can eliminate these occurrences through information and education."
A Providence woman was killed last Saturday when an Amtrak train struck her at the South Attleboro commuter rail station. Amtrak officials say the woman jumped in front of the train.

1. Stay away from the tracks unless you are boarding or leaving a stopped train.
2. Do not cross tracks unless directed by a railroad employee.
3. Stop at railroad crossings when the lights are flashing. If there are no lights then Stop, Look, Listen. (how retro!)
The recent suicides would not be prevented by a seminar on safet. "
