Franklin manhandles Warrior boys

FRANKLIN - Flying high after qualifying for the playoffs on Tuesday, the Foxboro High boys' basketball team was brought back to earth with a thud on Friday night, falling hard to Franklin 82-38 in a Hockomock League game at Franklin Field House.
No Foxboro player scored in double figures while five Panthers did. Mike Delaney had nine points to lead Foxboro, which fell to 2-2 (1-2 Hockomock League) on the year.
"It's a great lesson, you're playing against what I think is the best team in the league ... you take away the fact that we're not there yet," Foxboro coach C.J. Neely said.
The Warriors hung with the home Panthers for the first quarter before two baskets in the final two minutes by Franklin made the score 22-14. But from there it all went downhill for the Warriors, as they only scored 12 points over the next two quarters. At the end of the third quarter the Panthers had a sizable 64-26 lead.
"I think we were definitely attacking the rim much more early," Neely said of the difference after the first quarter. "We were going at them, we were drawing three defenders and finding the open man. Their pressure picked up a little bit, they went to their 1-3-1 zone, that hurt us a little bit. It really was just the lack of the intensity. We got passive, we got on our heels."
In the final 2:30 of the first half Franklin went on an 11-1 run as Foxboro made multiple turnovers, turning an 11-point lead into a 40-19 lead at halftime. The Panthers followed up with a 15-0 run to start the third quarter to remove whatever remote chance of a comeback the Warriors had.
"I think some guys on our team showed a lot of pride," Neely said. "People on the team are going to have to decide what kind of effort they want to give and how much it means for them to be a player for Foxboro."
The Warriors had just six field goals in the second half. Francisco Alicea chipped in with 8 points for Foxboro while Matt Palazini had 19 points for Franklin to lead all scorers. The Warriors host North Attleboro on Tuesday and Neely knows his team needs to have a short memory.
"I told them there's only one number that counts and that's one extra loss in the loss column," Neely said. "We'll learn our lesson and we'll get better, that's all we can do." |
