GIRLS HOOP: Bessette powers Norton to win
NORTON - To say that Kayla Bessette had the hot hand from the outside Monday night would be a gross understatement.
Bessette was 9-for-11 from the field, but even more spectacularly all nine made shots were 3-pointers as her game-high 27 points helped the Lancers to a Tri-Valley League victory over visiting Bellingham, 63-48 the final.
The sophomore, who entered Monday's game as Norton's leading three-point shooter, having going 9-for-23 in the first four games, equaled her season output against the winless Blackhawks. She hit three of her 3-pointers in the first quarter, as Norton built a sizable 25-13 lead. Then, after Bellingham had closed to within four points with under three minutes left in regulation, Bessette drained four more threes to put the game away.
"She had the big first quarter then started screening her in the second and third quarters," noted Norton coach Ted Currle. "But we did a better job setting up screens in the fourth quarter and she had four really big threes, that after (they) had cut into the lead. She's only a sophomore, too, so hopefully she be doing that for two more years."
Meg Brown also had two of Norton's 11 3-pointers, both in the first quarter as the Lancers piled up the 25 points.
Brown finished with eight points while Nicole Cuneo added 10 points.
Norton also had a season-low 13 turnovers.
The Lancers (1-3 TVL, 2-3) travel to Medway on Wednesday.
Attleboro 52, Barnstable 34
BARNSTABLE - The Bombardiers showed no ill effects of their long bus ride, using a 13-0 run in the first quarter to put away host Barnstable in their Old Colony League opener.
The Red Raiders hit a three-pointer as the shot clock expired on their first possession but were shut out by Attleboro's defensive during the 13-0 spurt. "They got it to double digits a couple of times after that, but we had the lead the rest of the way," noted AHS coach Mike Riley. "Overall, we did a great job defensively, controlling the ball, and we just took the momentum from the get-go."
Kelci Keene led the offense with 14 points while Allie Kelley had 11 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks. Freshman Savanna Boyle helped out with 11 points while Amanda Monson contributed eight points off the bench. Jenna Costa directed the offense with 14 assists as Attleboro won its second straight.
The Bombardiers (3-2) host New Bedford on Thursday.
Old Colony 30, Tri-County 28
ROCHESTER - After losing by 19 points to Old Colony in the first meeting, Tri-County coach Grant Forbes tinkered with his lineup with the hopes of keeping things closer this time around. The Cougars did just that, but ended up with on the short end of the score again.
To make matters worse, Erica Jonasson's potential game-tying lay-in from Mary Kate Geary with just four seconds left in the fourth quarter was waved off because of a traveling violation.
"We had our chances but we just had too many turnovers (34)," said Forbes. "The big difference was going with the smaller lineup so we could stay with their quickness. We kept their big girl in check. We went with a 1-3-1 zone and took her out of the picture, whereas she had 20 points last time we held her to four this time around."
Forbes praised the defensive work of Jonasson, Diana King and Alicia Walsh.
Jane Annis led the visiting Cougars with eight points while Geary added seven. Old Colony had won the first meeting between the two teams (51-32).
Tri-County (0-4) hosts Norfolk Aggie on Wednesday. |
