BOYS HOOP: Seekonk pulls out win
SEEKONK - First-year coach John McDonough wanted his team to play better defense in the second half, and the Warriors delivered.
Outscoring Bourne 20-4 in the third quarter, the Seekonk High boys' basketball broke open an otherwise close game and pulled away for a 74-43 victory over their South Coast Conference foes.
"We shut them down in the third period. That was the point of emphasis at the half, to make sure that they don't score many points," said McDonough, whose Warriors improved to 3-4. "Our guys played great shut-down defense."
The one-two punch of Ricky Silva (game-high 18 points) and Lucas Thompson (16) led Seekonk offensively, while Kyle Charron added 10 points. McDonough also noted the defensive play of Silva, Thompson, Matt Quinn and point guard Sean Heaney.
Seekonk is back in action tonight at Bishop Feehan, trying to avenge a 72-67 loss to the Shamrocks three weeks ago.

MENDON - The Cougars of Tri-County Regional High limited Bethany Christian to merely three points in the first quarter with their triangle-and-two defense, pestering the guards.

Steve Donovan totaled 10 points, but fetched 23 rebounds, dished out nine assists and had seven steals. In addition, Adam Barq fired in 17 points.
The Cougars were deadlocked with Bethany at 29-all by intermission, but managed to score just 10 third quarter points. The Cougars (2-3) are off until a game Tuesday at home with Old Colony. |
