NORTON - Town officials will call a meeting with Attleboro and others to negotiate a truck traffic pattern for the Attleboro landfill capping.

Selectmen Thursday night designated Vice Chairman Timothy Giblin, Selectman Robert Kimball Jr. and Town Manager James Purcell to represent the board and report back.

Kimball said the meeting will be sought as soon as possible with officials from Attleboro, landfill owner Attleboro Landfill Inc. and the state Department of Environmental Protection.

"Maybe it doesn't take one meeting. Maybe it takes six meetings. But it's got to be done, and it's got to be done together," Giblin said.

Selectmen have a "war chest" to fight plans that now have all trucks leaving the landfill via Norton's Union Road, South Worcester Street and John Scott Boulevard, Kimball said. A consultant to Attleboro Landfill said Nov. 24 there would be 50 to 75 daily trips to and from the landfill, which is adjacent to the former Shpack landfill on the Norton-Attleboro line.

Selectmen have fought for truck traffic mitigation for years, dating back to when the landfill proposed using Route 123 past Norton's schools, according to Kimball.

At one point, Kimball said he thought the parties had an agreement in which full trucks would come through Attleboro and leave empty through Norton's industrial park. Improvements to Norton's streets after the project was done were discussed, as well.
