ATTLEBORO - Shaw's Supermarkets will close its South Attleboro store Feb. 25, the company announced.

The store, in the Bristol Place shopping center near the South Attleboro commuter rail station, is one of four in New England the chain has said it plans to close.

Judy Chong, a spokeswoman for the West Bridgewater-based retailer, said other stores in line for closing including one in Brockton.

Chong said the stores were not meeting company goals.

The South Attleboro store employs 95 full and part-time workers, Chong said. The closing was announced to store employees Friday. The company spokesman declined to give specific information concerning the reasons for the store's closing.

However, competitor Stop and Shop recently added a superstore nearby at 251 Washington Street.

Shaw's parent company, Supervalu, is in the midst of a plan to remodel many of its stores and close others as it seeks to position itself as a low-price leader in the retail food industry.

Supervalu plans to close 50 underperforming locations, according to a report on the business Web site Seeking Alpha.
