GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Shamrocks keep Bishops in check - again
Saturday, January 3, 2009 1:01 AM EST
ATTLEBORO - For the second time this season the Bishop Feehan High girls' basketball team proved it can measure up to the defending MIAA Division 3 state champion, and this time around the Shamrocks did it without their star player.
Getting a monster effort from Jenna Roncarati, the Shamrocks rallied from a 13-point, second-half deficit to take care of Archbishop Williams, 53-47 Friday evening.
The Bishops outscored Bishop Feehan 21-7 in the second quarter to open up an 11-point halftime lead, then scored the first bucket of the third quarter of the third quarter to make it a 13-point margin. But the Shamrocks never wavered and clamped down on defense to outscore the Bishops 35-14 the rest of the way.
Roncarati did most of the damage as she poured in a team-high 26 points, but it was a stellar defensive effort by everyone on the floor that helped the Shamrocks (5-1) to the victory.
Feehan cut the deficit to three points then took the lead for good on a nice lay-in by Roncarati with six points left in the game. Roncarati, who had 10 points and six rebounds in the first meeting between the two teams - a 57-40 win in the season opener - also had nine rebounds. Feehan won that season opener behind Roncarati and Amy Lepley (18 points), but still managed to rally Friday even without the injured Lepley.
Val Driscoll led all scorers for Archbishop Williams with her 28 points, but Feehan's defense limited her to eight, second-half points.
The Shamrocks host South Kingston, R.I. on Sunday afternoon.
Holliston 39, Norton 31HOLLISTON - A scoreless second quarter held the Lancers back from catching Holliston in a Tri-Valley League game.
Shannon Hansen led Norton with seven points while Alex Grimes had six points and team-high nine rebounds. The Lancers (1-3) entertain Bellingham on Monday.
Dighton-Rehoboth 61,Greater New Bedford 34 REHOBOTH - Despite holding Boston College-bound Mary Nwachukwu under 20 points for the first time this season, the Bears still didn't have enough to deal the unbeaten Falcons their first loss of the season in a South Coast Conference game.
Nwachukwu still led all scorers with 17 points to go along with her superb all-around game of 14 rebounds, five blocked shots and three steals. But more importantly, the Falcons got 12 points from Sadie Gosselin and eight from Kelsey Mikkelson.
Greater New Bedford came out strong, but D-R held the Bears to three second-quarter points to pull away and a 10-0 run to span the third and fourth quarters put the game out of reach.
The Falcons (7-0, 4-0 SCC) are at Wareham on Tuesday.
Seekonk 47, Bishop Connolly 39FALL RIVER - The Warriors rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to notch their second straight victory, turning back the Cougars in a non-league contest.
Vanessa Noelte produced 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Warriors, who trailed 26-17 at intermission. However, Seekonk limited the Cougars to just 13 points over the final 16 minutes by extending their man-to-man defensive pressure, allowing just four third-quarter points.
McKenzie Smith added nine points and clutched a dozen rebounds, while Lauren Medeiros hit three key free throws in the final four minutes of play. Seekonk (2-3) resumes SCC action today with a 2 p.m. game at Wareham.
North Attleboro scratches out win over Bulldogs
North Attleboro 62, Canton 60CANTON - With a balanced scoring attack and some staunch defensive play down the stretch, North Attleboro came home from Canton with a victory over the Bulldogs in a Hockomock League game.
The Rocketeers (2-4) produced an 11-point halftime lead (38-27), but then managed to score just four points in the third quarter. In the meantime, Canton scored the first 11 points of the second half.
"We were just good enough defensively to sustain the win," said North coach John DelBonis, whose Rocketeers relied on man-to-man principles throughout.
Jill Cullen scored six of her 18 points during the fourth quarter, including a key basket to give North a five-point lead with just under three minutes left.
Cullen netted 12 of her points by halftime and with Robin Armstrong, who scored 13 of her 17 points over the first 16 minutes, gave North a reliable inside-outside presence.
In addition, Kelsey Boyd totaled a dozen points in her first varsity start, while Nicole Hurd added 11 points. "In the first half everyone contributed," added DelBonis of the Rocketeers being able to find the open shot.
North returns to action Tuesday at home against Foxboro.
Mansfield 51, Sharon 42SHARON - By virtue of outscoring Sharon 20-13 in the fourth quarter, the undefeated Hornets pulled away for another Hockomock League victory.
Mansfield moved to 4-0 in the league and 6-0 overall.
"We actually played a better third quarter. We only scored eight points, which is our lowest for the season, but we played good defense and only gave up eight points," noted Mansfield coach Mike Redding. "In the fourth we got the lead up to 47-34 with about a minute to go and they hit a couple of late threes to make it a little closer."
Jess Eason had another standout performance for Mansfield as she scored a game-high 15 points while pulling down 11 rebounds. Teammate Kelli McPherson had a strong game as well with seven points and five assists while Colleen Hooper hit for 14 points.
The Hornets look to extend their unbeaten run when they host King Philip on Monday.
Oliver Ames 65, King Philip 25EASTON - Also in the Hockomock League, Oliver Ames proved more than a handful for the Warriors, jumping out to a 39-15 halftime and never looking back.
The Tigers held King Philip to eight points or less in all four quarters, including just three points in the fourth quarter. Offensively, Lauren Battista led the way with her game-high 27 points, the junior outscoring the Warriors on her own.
Sophomore Charlotte Firth was the high scorer for the Warriors with her seven points.
King Philip (1-5) travels to play Mansfield in a makeup game Monday night.
