SWIMMING: Attleboro picks up first victory




WESTWOOD - The Bombardiers broke into the win column!

Senior captains Justin Whitmarsh and Cody Koehler each delivered two strong performances, while sophomore Rick Mejia and freshman Rob Braza each won two events as the Attleboro High boys' swimming team took home its first victory of the Southern Conference season Thursday, a 97-85 verdict at Westwood High.

Whitmarsh clocked personal best times in winning both the 50 and 100 freestyle events, while Koehler came through with a personal best in winning the 100 butterfly and also taking second in the 50 freestyle.

AHS coach Ari Weinstein has seen the future of the Bombardier program and it definitely includes Mejia and Braza. Mejia won both the 200 and 500 freestyle events, while Braza finished first in the 200 individual medley with a personal best time and also first in the 100 breaststroke.

- Juniors Matt Cute and Sam Jennings came through with strong showings as unbeaten overpowered Durfee 87-76 in a Southern Conference meet at Attleboro High's Dentch Natatorium. Cute won the 100 breaststroke and took second in the 100 butterfly for the Shamrocks (3-0), while Jennings took second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 500 freestyle. Jack Pettine (200 individual medley), Chris Tinory (100 freestyle), Isaac Bourque (50 freestyle) and Matt Brawley (500 freestyle) also won events for the Shamrocks. The Shamrocks are next at UMass-Dartmouth against Bishop Stang.

- At the Mayers Natatorium, (3-1) scored a 93-75 victory over Brockton in a Southern Conference meet behind freshmen John Roy and John Grant. Roy won both the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, while Grant won the 500 freestyle with a personal best performance. In addition, senior Steve Gilligan won the 100 backstroke and took second in the 500 freestyle.

Christian Moran (200 freestyle) and Ed Olean (100 breaststroke) also won events for the Warriors.
