RI man sentenced after pleading guilty to 2006 I-95 fatal crash

Cumberland, RI resident given three years of probation, 300 hours of community service
ATTLEBORO - A 25-year-old Rhode Island man was given three years' probation and will be required to serve 300 hours of community service after pleading guilty Monday to motor vehicle homicide in a 2006 crash.

Christopher R. Cartier, of Cumberland, R.I., admitted in Attleboro District Court to rear-ending a Jeep Cherokee around 6:45 a.m. in September 2006 on Interstate 95 near the Toner Boulevard exit.

The driver of the Jeep, Carl L. Crowe, 59, of Johnston, R.I., suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at Sturdy Memorial Hospital Sept. 16, 2006.

Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash, according to police.

Cartier apologized to the victim's family in court. In addition, Cartier will lose his license to drive for 15 years, according to court records.

A driving to endanger charge was dismissed and Cartier was found not responsible to civil complaints of failing to drive within marked lanes and speeding.
