GIRLS' HOOP: Bourne deals D-R first loss

BOURNE - The matchup of South Coast Conference girls' basketball powers certainly lived up to its billing Friday night, as Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High and Bourne went toe-to-toe for four quarters.

However, it was a late, second-half spurt by the Canalmen that did D-R in, Bourne winning the battle of the unbeatens, 45-44.

"We just broke down offensively, from about the end of the third quarter to the middle of the fourth. We just turned the ball over too many times," said D-R coach Jon Pacheco. "It was back-and-forth the whole way and the next thing you know we were down seven. They made a big three off a turnover and that was the dagger. We missed a lot of open looks, and that's uncommon for us."

The teams were knotted at 6-all after the first quarter, tied 21-all at the break and Bourne held a 32-31 lead after three before stretching the margin to seven points with just over a minute left in the game. D-R's full-court press helped get the lead back down to one, but the Falcons ran out of timeouts and time.

Bourne now sits atop the SCC standings at 5-0, 7-0 overall. The loss dropped the Falcons to 5-1 in the SCC and 8-1 overall. "We expected this type of nip-and-tuck game, but we didn't play the way we're capable," Pacheco added.

D-R's Mary Nwachukwu led all scorers with her 22 points while teammate Robyn Catarius added 10 points.

For Bourne, Ryann Chase and Courtney Donovan had 16 points apiece.

The Falcons look to bounce back Sunday as they visit Seekonk.

Apponequet 63, Seekonk 44

LAKEVILLE - Elsewhere in the South Coast Conference, Kelsey Johnson and Kelsey Craveiro combined to outscore Seekonk as the Lakers chalked up the victory.

Craveiro led all scorers with her 26 points while Johnson added 21, the two combining for 47 of the team's 63 points. The twosome helped the Lakers open up a 53-27 lead after three quarters.

For Seekonk, Vanessa Noelte was high scorer with 13 points while Lauren Medeiros added 11 points and Mackenzie Smith had five points and 10 rebounds.

Seekonk hosts Dighton-Rehoboth on Sunday afternoon (1).

Canton 38, King Philip 27 CANTON - In Hockomock League play, the Bulldogs broke open an otherwise close game by outscoring KP 15-6 in the fourth quarter.

Erika Bornemann led the way for host Canton as she poured in a game-high 17 points, the Bulldogs taking just a 23-21 lead into the fourth quarter.

"I thought we won most facets of the game except for the scoreboard," said KP coach Dan Damish. "We've really been working hard and the W's are going to come, we're just not getting the shots to drop. We rebounded well and defended, but a lot of what happened in the fourth quarter was because we couldn't score."

Offensively for the Warriors, Allie Lomp and Ashley Brescia were the leading scorers with six points apiece. Diane LaBlue and Sara Annis had nine rebounds apiece.

KP (0-6 Hockomock, 1-7 overall) hosts Foxboro on Tuesday.

Medfield 71, Norton 35

MEDFIELD - Medfield went to the free-throw line 39 times and hit on 31 of their charity chances in routing the Lancers in the Tri-Valley League game.

Medfield outscored Norton 31-6 at the free-throw line and held a 32-16 advantage by intermission.

Kayla Bessette, hitting a pair of three-pointers, and Alex Grimes each scored eight points for Norton (2-5), which returns to action Sunday afternoon at Ashland.

Avon 33, Tri-County 26

FRANKLIN - Despite holding Avon's 1,000-point scorer Shante Dezrick to six points, the winless Cougars allowed too many second-change baskets in a non-league loss.

Tri-County's Erica Jonasson did a great job chasing down Dezrick in the Cougars' box-and-one defense. T-C did manage 13 steals, including seven by Jonasson. Jonasson also finished with six points and seven rebounds while playing the entire game.

Also for T-C, Jane Annis scored a team-high nine points while Amanda Barr had a team-high eight rebounds. The Cougars (0-6) are at Diman Voke on Tuesday.
