BOY'S HOOP: Shamrocks upend Coyle-Cassidy
TAUNTON - Down seven points with just 1:52 left in the game, it would have been easy for the Shamrocks to throw in the towel.
But sparked by its full-court press, Feehan ended Friday night's Eastern Athletic Conference clash on a 13-0 run to turn a late-game deficit into a huge league win, beating previously unbeaten Coyle-Cassidy 70-64.
"It was quite the dramatic finish," Feehan coach Matt Freeman said. "It was quite exciting, a great team effort."
The Warriors shot the lights out in the second half, turning a 10-point halftime deficit into a seven-point lead with just under two minutes to go thanks in large part to seven second-half three-pointers. But that's when the Shamrock press took over.
The press created some key turnovers and the Shamrocks capitalized, storming back behind a total team effort. Mike Adams' three-pointer gave the Shamrocks a four-point lead they never looked back from, while Ryan Sheehan, who led all scorers with 26 points, hit key free-throws down the stretch to preserve the key win for Feehan.
It was both teams' first EAC game. Coyle, who figures to be the Shamrocks greatest hurdle in a quest for an EAC championship, came into the game at 6-0.
The Shamrocks (6-1, 1-0 EAC) host Plymouth South on Tuesday.
Seekonk 91, Apponequet 78
SEEKONK - Down six heading into the fourth quarter, the Warriors picked the right time to put on a shooting clinic.
Kyle Charron scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth as Seekonk outscored the Lakers 31-12 for the South Coast Conference win.
Ricky Silva led Seekonk with his game-high 27 points. Lucas Thompson also had 20 points while Matt Quin added 10 points and 16 rebounds.
Seekonk (4-5) will visit Dighton-Rehoboth on Sunday.
Medfield 72, Norton 63
NORTON - Despite knocking down nine three-pointers, the Lancers couldn't knock off Medfield in a Tri-Valley League game.
To counter the Lancers and keep their two-year TVL unbeaten streak intact, the Warriors hit on 27 of 34 free throws (79.4 percent) for the victory. Medfield is now 7-0 in the TVL. Norton falls to 3-3, 4-3 overall.
The game was tied 29-all at halftime and Medfield held a slim two-point lead with about four minutes left in the game, but the free throws started to add up. Medfield's Connor Hatton had 10 free throws in the final quarter and finished 14-of-19 for the night for a game-high 24 points.
Norton's Ed Hannon took advantage of Medfield's defensive focus on the Lancers' leading scorer, Darren Doucette. While Doucette was held to just four points, Hannon dropped in four three-pointers and finished with 23 points. Also for Norton, Doug Schlehuber had 13 points and nine assists while Ricky Travers chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Norton is at Ashland Sunday.
Bourne 67,
Dighton-Rehoboth 63 (OT)
REHOBOTH - Jon Cusolito hit a three-pointer as time expired in regulation, then the Canalmen went on to outscore Dighton-Rehoboth 8-4 in overtime for the South Coast Conference win.
D-R led 47-40 after three quarters but couldn't put Bourne away, Cusolito hitting one of his three three-pointers to send the game into OT. Cusolito finished with a team-high 16 points while Cody Sloniecki added 12 and Matt White 10 for the visitors.
For the Falcons, Josh Koneski had four three-pointers of his own, part of his game-high, 30-point performance. Teammate Nik Montanino helped out with 19 points.
D-R (1-5 SCC, 2-5) hosts Seekonk on Sunday afternoon (3).
Canton 75, King Philip 54
WRENTHAM - In Hockomock League play, Jake Cintolo and Alex Lagos both had career highs for points but it wasn't enough to get the Warriors in the win column.
Canton outscored KP 21-11 in the first quarter and was never headed.
Cintolo, a senior, finished with a game-high 24 points while Lagos, a sophomore, followed up with 16 points. Winless KP travels to Foxboro on Tuesday. |
