NORTON - The Norton High wrestling team could have easily went 0-3 in Saturday's quad meet against Melrose, Somerset and Sharon.
But freshman Brett Gallagher had the biggest win of his short varsity career and Zack MacTavish continued his stellar year for the Lancers, both wrestlers helping Norton come from behind in the final matches of meets with Melrose and Sharon en route to finishing the meet 2-1.
The Lancers were trailing Melrose going into the meet's final match. But Gallagher came up big when he was needed the most, getting a pin at 119 pounds when only a pin would do and leading the Lancers to a 37-35 victory.
"He is a very good young wrestler," Norton coach Pat Coleman said. "He's a terrific athlete. It looked like he was going to win the match, but I was surprised he got the pin."
Gallagher is now 12-4 on the year.
After one comeback, it was time for another. The Lancers were trailing Sharon by five going into that meet's final match, meaning only a pin would give the victory to Norton. Zack MacTavish dominated his opponent from the get-go, but couldn't get past an 8-1 advantage after two periods. Luckily, in the last period, MacTavish got the top position, his best, and turned his man for a pin with just 19 seconds remaining.
"He's very good at turning his man in the top position," Coleman said.
MacTavish is now 14-2 on the year. The Lancers, 10-3 overall, host Foxboro in a non-league match on Wednesday.
