FOXBORO - The King Philip High boys' basketball team came into Foxboro high school betting that if they could keep Francisco Alicea from getting his points, they could escape with the Hockomock League victory.
But the Foxboro Warriors showed they are more than just one player, as they walked away from the league game with a convincing 71-38 win despite just two points from Alicea, Foxboro's leading scorer.
"I think they came out with an idea of just shutting 'Cisco down with a box-and-one early," Foxboro coach C.J. Neely said. "That's a big game for him, being an unselfish teammate. He won't be in the box score, but this was probably one of his best games. He set screens, got other guys open, he passed the ball, he didn't force shots."
Dillon Myers was the biggest beneficiary of the attention paid to Alicea, scoring a season-high 22 points, including multiple three-pointers. Myers had struggled earlier in the season after recovering from mononucleosis.
"We've been dying to see Dillon get back to his shape," Neely said. "Honestly I think he still has another step to go. He had a great game tonight but I think he's capable of even more."
The score was 13-7 Foxboro after the first quarter but the home team used a 24-9 second quarter to put the game out of reach by halftime.
The loss drops King Philip to 0-9 on the year. KP will look to end its losing streak on Friday at Stoughton. Foxboro improved to 3-5, 2-5 in the Hockomock league and take on Sharon on Friday.
