For an entrepreneur looking to make money in a struggling economy, there's an immediate and sure-fire way to rake in the big bucks - find a product and put Barack Obama's face on it.
Obama will be sworn in as president today, but his supporters have already spent hundreds of millions of dollars on merchandise bearing his likeness.
Around the country, Obama's face is popping up everywhere, from T-shirts to chocolate bars. Topps, a company known for its sports trading cards, has produced a 90-card set of Obama trading cards that trace his life.
With item's like "Obama Hope on a Rope" soap and "Obama Blend" coffee, the Obama merchandise industry has seen sales top $300 million.
He is also featured in a new issue of the Spiderman comic series and inspired the latest Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavor, "Yes Pecan."
If you can't find that certain Obama-related item in stores, fear not because the Internet has just about anything someone looking to commemorate the inauguration could possibly want.
A quick search of ebay.com provides even more buttons, shirts and posters, as well as some more unusual items.
Need an Obama bobble head doll? One can be yours for just $140. Looking for some of the new president's early childhood art? A scribbly drawing supposedly made by a 3-year-old Obama is yours for $990,000.
For a cool $333,000, you can even get your hands on a letter sent to the Obama campaign headquarters that was returned because it was too large. If the cost seems high, don't worry, shipping within the United States free.
Obama's ascension to the nation's highest office has also created a high demand for Web site addresses featuring his name.
PresidentBarackObama4U.com can be had for $2.2 million, while myherobarackobama.com is selling for $500,000.
Not a fan of the former senator from Illinois? ObamaDrools.com may be the site for you, and only costs $100,000.
For the person with an extra $5 million to spend, perhaps PizzaObama.com would be the perfect way to bring customers into a new pizza business.
While he may be focused more on the struggling housing market and leading the country through two wars after he is sworn in, Obama will know that his face is helping to spur at least one part of the economy. |
