Pair put on probation in alleged plasma TV scam at NA mall
Top Headlines Robert Borelli, 23, of Woburn, was placed on probation for two years after admitting Friday in Attleboro District Court that police had sufficient facts to find him guilty of larceny. His case was continued without a finding for two years while he is on probation. Judge David Turcotte warned Borelli, the alleged getaway driver, that he would face a two-year jail term if he violates his probation. Earlier, his alleged accomplice, Anthony T. DaCosta, 21, also of Woburn, admitted to meeting with an undercover police officer last month outside Sears at Emerald Square mall in North Attleboro, and exchanging money as part of the scam. The undercover police officer posed as a businessman lured to the mall and promised six overstocked plasma TVs for $5,500 cash. Police said the TVs, in fact, never existed, and the officer was only given a fake Sears invoice before the alleged scam artists left. DaCosta was arrested after police gave him a package containing slips of paper surrounded by $270 in cash. Borelli was arrested driving around the mall. The alleged mastermind of the scam, Keith A. Ryan, 35, of Woburn, turned himself in last week on a warrant obtained by North Attleboro police. He pleaded innocent and was released on $200 cash bail. His lawyer, John Baccari of Wakefield, declined to comment on the allegations. "He's entered a plea of not guilty," Baccari said.
