Guilty plea on porn charge

FOXBORO - A former Foxboro High School English teacher pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography Friday in federal court.

Gregg Woodward was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal's office after the hearing in U.S. District Court in Worcester, said Marty Castles, courtroom clerk for Judge Dennis Saylor.

Saylor scheduled Woodward for sentencing May 7, Castles said.

Woodward faces up to 10 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

Woodward was arrested last March 31 at his Milford apartment after an investigation by the FBI and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office.

Undercover transactions by federal agents showed that in 2007 Woodward subscribed to at least two Web sites that distribute child pornography.

He initially denied purchasing or downloading child pornography, according to the FBI complaint.

However, he opened up to agents after they said they had a search warrant for his apartment and computer.

Woodward initially was suspended without pay by Superintendent Christopher Martes.

At that time, Woodward was in his 12th year teaching at Foxboro High. He also was the adviser to the school literary magazine.

Martes said he had not expected Woodward to return to Foxboro once he entered custody last spring.

However, had Woodward been found innocent, school officials "would certainly have given him consideration," Martes said.

"I heard good things about his teaching," Martes said.

"I know the faculty was upset. I know students were upset. In that sense, I feel saddened."
