Joyce Chatfield

ATTLEBORO - Joyce Lee (McMahon) Chatfield died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 at Life Care Center of Attleboro. She was the wife of the late Arthur Ives Chatfield, who passed away on July 4, 2006.

Joyce was born in Corning, N.Y., the daughter of the late Beatrice and Lee McMahon. Raised and educated in Corning, Joyce was a graduate of Corning Academy.

Upon completion of high school, Joyce furthered her education and graduated from Grove City College, Grove City, Pa. She also attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. After completing college, Joyce opened her own commercial art business.

Joyce and her family moved to Attleboro in 1962.

Upon the completion of her sons' education in the Attleboro public schools, Joyce herself decided to become a teacher and tutor in the local community. Joyce did private tutoring for many at her home at St. John the Evangelist School in Attleboro and at Mercymount Country Day School in Cumberland, R.I. She was very proud of the successes of her students over the years, and many of them had kept in touch with her after completing their educations.

Joyce is survived by her three sons and their families: Charles "Bud", his wife Dafne and daughter Brianna; John, his wife Karen and son John; and Stephen, his wife Anna and sons Brett, Patrick and Davis. She also leaves a sister-in-law, Mary Chatfield of Ithaca, N.Y.; a cousin, Holly Helfrich of Middletown Springs, Vt., and her sons, Alex and Andrew; a nephew, Brian McMahon and his wife Kim of Sarasota Springs, N.Y.; and nieces Sue Iversen and her husband Chris of Gorham, N.Y., and Nan Cavanaugh and her husband Jim of Harrisburg, Pa.

Joyce's family would like to thank all of her close friends who visited her often and helped them this past year. The family gives special thanks to Dr. Steven Bensson and his staff for their care and compassion. The family also greatly appreciates the love and support from the staff at Life Care Center of Attleboro. The care she received there was exceptional, and these special people will always remain close to their hearts and in their prayers.

Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Jan. 29 at 11 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main St., Attleboro. Burial will be private.

WEST WARWICK, R.I. - Robert E. Gay, 98, of West Warwick and formerly of North Attleboro and Plainville, passed away early Friday, Jan. 16, 2009 in Westview Healthcare Center. He was the husband of the late Phyllis (Brown) Gay and the late Dorothy (Arthur) Gay.

Born March 23, 1910 in Providence, he was a son of the late Robert E. and Alice (Munyan) Gay. Robert had been a resident of West Warwick for over two years and had previously lived in Cumberland for nearly two years. He lived most of his life in North Attleboro and Plainville.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of North Attleboro for many years and he sang in the church's choir. He was also a member of Aurora Chapter No. 103, International Order of Odd Fellows.

Prior to World War II, Robert served the U.S. Army at Fort Adams and later Fort Devens.

He worked as a toolmaker in various silver shops in North Attleboro, Attleboro and Providence.

He is survived by his brother, Arnold I. Gay and his wife Helen of West Warwick, R.I.; a stepdaughter, Joyce Santos-Parker of Rockingham, N.C.; two stepsons, John Santos and James Roberts and his wife Robin of West Warwick; as well as several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was brother of the late Blance M. Craig, Howard E. Gay and Edith M. Mercer.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of North Attleboro, 20 Hoppin Hill Ave., North Attleboro. Burial will take place privately in Pineville Cemetery, Manchester, N.H., at a later date.

Rita Z. Restino, 89

SANDWICH - Rita Z. Restino, 89, of Sandwich, a loving mother, memere and grand-memere, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009.

Born in Pawtucket on April 1, 1919, Rita was the daughter of the late George and Zorinne Beauvais. She lived in Pawtucket until she was 5 years old, before moving to North Attleboro, where she lived until she was 12 years of age. Her family subsequently settled in Rehoboth.

Rita was employed at the Swank Jewelry Co. for 20 years.

Upon retiring, she enjoyed reading, sewing, crocheting and creating beautiful heirlooms for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards and was always up for a game of Scrabble.

She is survived by her children, Doreen Storch of Attleboro, Donna Plourde of Groton, Dianne Hayes of Bourne, Deborah Reeves of Dennis and Ralph Restino of Sandwich; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Doris and Claire.

Family and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours on Saturday, Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a memorial service starting at noon at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich.

Grace Hardt, 91

ATTLEBORO - Grace May (Woll) Hardt, 91, of Bishop Street, Attleboro, died on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 at the Golden Living Center - Garden Place in Attleboro. She was the wife of the late Lt. John W. Hardt, APD, who passed away in 1965.

Though being a resident of Attleboro for most of her life, she was born in Providence on Nov. 19, 1917 and was a daughter of the late Otto H. Woll and Grace May (Jordan) Hardt.

Mrs. Hardt was raised and educated in Attleboro.

She was a homemaker and took care of the household for her beloved family. She will be remembered for the wonderful Sunday dinners she made for her family over the years.

Her favorite pastimes included knitting, playing Scrabble, rug hooking, crossword puzzles and watching soap operas on television.

She leaves six children: Stephen R. Hardt, MSGT, USAF (Ret.) of Attleboro, Dorothy Burt of Middletown, R.I., Joseph Hardt of Texas, David Hardt of Carver, Thomas Hardt of West Virginia, and Gregory Hardt of Attleboro; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, William Woll of Attleboro; several nieces and nephews; and extended family members and friends.

She was the sister of the late Frederick O. Woll.

Blanche Therrian, 91

ATTLEBORO - Blanche P. Therrian, 91, of Park Street, Attleboro, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, passed peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 at the LifeCare Center of Attleboro, where she resided the past three years. She was the beloved wife of the late George J. Therrian.

Born Blanche P. Poirier in Pawtucket on April 28, 1917, Blanche was a daughter of the late Edgar and Mary (McGovern) Poirier. She was raised in the Hebronville section of Attleboro and was educated in the Attleboro public schools.

Mrs. Therrian was employed for 25 years at Texas Instruments in Attleboro, retiring in 1975.

Blanche was a member of the Retirees Club at Texas Instruments, the Emblem Club of the Attleboro Lodge of Elks, BPOE 1014 and the Moose Club in Attleboro.

A former 42-year resident of Essex Street in Attleboro, Blanche later resided for a period of time at Christopher Heights.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and animals, and also volunteered for 30 years at Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro.

Blanche is survived by a beloved son, Edward A. Therrian and his wife Patricia of Somerset; six grandchildren: Kathleen Mansfield, Bonnie Conaway, Cindy Therrian, Patrick Therrian, Kristine Therrian and Kristyn Therrian; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the beloved mother of the late George J. Therrian Jr., and the sister of the late Edward Poirier, Mary Beaulieu and Doris McClintock.

Family and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, Jan. 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck St., Attleboro.

A funeral will be conducted on Friday, Jan. 30 at 9 a.m. from the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Coyle Drive, Seekonk, celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Rita, pastor. Mrs. Therrian will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband and son in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Dodgeville.

Helen Taillon, 62

NORTH ATTLEBORO - Helen Cecile (Beaulieu) Taillon, 62, of Spring Street, North Attleboro died on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. She was the wife of Gerard L. Taillon, whom she married on Sept. 3, 1966 at Sacred Heart Church.

As a lifelong resident of North Attleboro, she was born on Nov. 23, 1946 and was a daughter of the late Gerard O. Beaulieu and Cecile M. (LePage) Beaulieu. She was a graduate of North Attleboro High School, Class of 1964.

She was employed as an assembler for Creed Rosary Manufacturing Company for 10 years prior to retiring.

Her favorite pastimes included playing bingo, puzzles and, in earlier years, swimming and diving. She enjoyed the time she spent with her beloved grandchildren and the visits to the "town coffee shop" with family and friends.

In addition to her husband, she leaves three children: Pamela A. Mercadante of Plainville, Annette J. Zannella of Cranston, R.I. and Daniel R. Taillon of North Attleboro; six grandchildren; three sisters: Claire R. Paradis of Attleboro, Rose Anne Flamand of Plainville and Alice I. Beaulieu of North Attleboro; 12 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews and extended family members and friends.

She was the mother of the late Gerard A. Taillon, who passed away in 1986, and the sister of the late Robert G. Beaulieu, Roger L. Beaulieu and Jeanne Y. Daneau.

Cecil Farmer, 78

WRENTHAM - Cecil A. "Bud" Farmer, 78, of Taunton Street, Wrentham, and a former Pawtucket and Lincoln, R.I., resident, died on Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 in the Maples Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wrentham. He was the former husband of Phyllis (Fober) Farmer.

Born in Baltimore, Md., on Nov. 11, 1930, he was a son of the late Cecil and Alberta (Spence) Farmer. He attended North Providence schools, and served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He had been the owner of the Yankee Armature of Woonsocket, R.I., and Pawtucket, and of the former Mohawk Armature of Boston. He retired as a mental retardation worker 1 at the Wrentham Developmental Center in Wrentham in 2000.

At one time, Mr. Farmer had been a very active golfer and member of the Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln, R.I. He loved the outdoors and also enjoyed saltwater fishing as well.

His passion was for playing the guitar and the mandolin, and he and his family were once known as Buddy and the Band.

He was the loving father of Dorene Buco of Rehoboth, Holly Sarza of Harrisville, R.I., and Gary Farmer of Lincoln, R.I.; the dear brother of Frances Fay of Pawtucket and Virginia Girard of North Smithfield, R.I.; and the devoted grandfather of two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by dear friend Joan Pinney of Wrentham.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call today, Tuesday, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the R.J. Ross Funeral Home, 135 South St. (Route 1A), Wrentham Center, concluding with a brief prayer service at 6 p.m.

Theresa DePalma, 92

MANSFIELD - Theresa (Phillips) DePalma of Mansfield died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 at her home. She was 92. Mrs. DePalma was the loving wife of the late Michael DePalma.

Born in Norwood on Sept. 10, 1916, Mrs. DePalma was the daughter of the late Frank and Felicia Phillips. She was raised and educated in Norwood and had lived in Mansfield since 1936, where she worked in the school department.

Mrs. DePalma is survived by her three daughters: Carol Foss and her husband Michael of Mansfield, Michelle Anton and her husband Robert of Mansfield and Marianne Costa and her husband Frank of Taunton. She is also survived by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Her funeral will be Thursday, Jan. 29 at 9 a.m. from the Bolea-Amici Funeral Home, 115 North Main St., Mansfield, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106), Mansfield.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.

Visiting hours are Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Mansfield.
