More than half of NA's RTM seats go begging

Everyone who took out papers assured of election
NORTH ATTLEBORO - It's official: Less than half of the Representative Town Meeting seats on April's town election ballot have candidates.

While 45 candidates took out nomination papers, only 37 residents returned papers with the required signatures by Tuesday's deadline, making them official candidates for seats on the town's legislature. There will be no contested races so every candidate that returned nomination papers is assured of getting a seat as long as they get at least 25 votes in the town election.

There were 78 seats available at April's town election. Unfilled seats can be filled two ways - write-in candidates that garner at least 25 votes can be elected to the seats or interested individuals can apply for a one-year appointments to the vacant seats, which will be filled when precincts caucus prior to June's town meeting.
