North children's gift boosts town's animal shelter

A North Attleboro Animal Shelter cat named Farrah appears to be thanking Alyssa Soldani-Sylvia, right, the director of the Children’s Workshop in North Attleboro during a visit to the animal shelter. Soldani-Sylvia was on hand to deliver a donation of cash, supplies and food made by the children and staff of The Children’s Workshop to the shelter, which Animal Control Officer Karen Fontneau, left, gratefully accepted. NORTH ATTLEBOROPennies can add up quickly, and the North Attleboro Animal Shelter is fortunate for that.

Families who frequent the Children's Workshop on Kelley Boulevard recently chipped in their spare change to help the shelter, raising more than $45 through the Pennies for Pets program, along with donations of towels, blankets, dog toys and pet food.

Alyssa Soldani-Sylvia with the Children's Workshop said the project was inspired by recent news stories about the growing number of abandoned pets in the tough economy.

"We wanted to do a community outreach by participating in a community service project," she said.

"We started a Pennies for Pets program, and asked our families and the public to make donations of spare change or anything off the shelter's wish list," she said.
Community service projects are encouraged by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, which accredits the program.

Soldani-Sylvia thanked the families and public for their support during the drive.
