Outstanding Norton student's honor could lead to fair
Top Headlines The student's mother suggested the fair to the school committee during the presentation Monday night, and the committee seemed receptive to the idea. Senior Rosemary Le, who plays three Chinese instruments, received the Certificate of Academic Excellence from Superintendent Patricia Ansay. Every school district has one honoree for the certificate from the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents. Le's mother, Lan, then spoke up and said her family would like to do a cultural night for the school sometime. She said Westwood's cultural night is in its second year. Rosemary Le said the group has performed during a teacher appreciation night. "My children, I want them to be able to give," Lan Le said. Ansay replied, "I think we can make that happen." Assistant Principal Michael Barth said perhaps a cultural fair could be organized through the world languages department. School board Chairman Thomas Golota said he'd like to see such a program open to the community. "This would be a perfect opportunity to show what the Asian community is all about," he said. Rosemary Le plays the Chinese dulcimer, Chinese flute and Chinese banjo, as well as the piano, in her family's group, which volunteers to perform at various events, guidance counselor Donald Rita wrote in his Dec. 8 letter to Ansay recommending Le for the superintendent's certificate. Le also has performed in competitions with the American Chinese Art Society Dance Troupe, Rita wrote. Academically, Le is ranked first among her class of 150 students, he said. Her weighted junior year grade point average was 4.46 on a 4.0 scale. She also is a member of five honor societies and the student council. The school board was impressed. "I read this and I say, 'When do you have time to study?'" Golota said. "This is the most incredible resume I have ever read." Le said she plans to study applied mathematics. Her top college choice is MIT. She also is looking into Harvard and Yale. MICHAEL GELBWASSER covers Norton for The Sun Chronicle.
