BOSTON - Seekonk's Johnny Gregorek shattered the previous fastest time in the state in the two mile this year, running a 9:21.96 on Saturday at the Division 4 Championship Meet in Boston to finish first.
Gregorek's time was the fastest in the state by just over eight seconds this year and the second fastest time in the country. The senior did his best running as the race wound down, finishing the last 800 meters in 2:10 and the final 400 meteres in 63 seconds.
The time was a personal best by 27 seconds for Gregorek, who had primarily been running shorter races this year to work on speed. The Warrior won the race convincingly.
The Warrior boys finished in third place overall behind Hamilton-Wenham and Hudson. Casey O'Brien finished second in the 300 with a time of 36.29 while Sam Spencer was fourth in the 600 with a time of 1:26.41. The 4x200 relay team, consisting of Paul Hindle, Joey Teixeira, Alex Miller and O'Brien, took second.
The Warrior girls finished in fifth place thanks to a strong showing by the field event athletes.
Janelle Clarkson was the Division 4 champion in the high jump with a jump of 5-2 while teammate Leanne Poirier took fifth with a jump of 5-0.
Krista Chauvin battled back from an illness to take second in the shot put with a throw of 37-3.
"I think she'll be 100 percent next week," Seekonk coach Eli Mello said.
Jen Salit took third for Seekonk in the 1000 meters.
**Another state-best time resides locally as the
ATTLEBORO girls' 4x200 relay team set a new team record with a 1:45.67, winning the event with ease at the Division 1 Meet. Marie Gulino, Emily Ouellette, Janelle Johnston and Dara Edge not only have the best time in Massachusetts, but they helped Attleboro take seventh in the team standings.
"The past three times the girls ran it they dropped, from 1:47, to 1:46 and now 1:45," Attleboro coach Peter Lacasse said. "Their confidence level is really high right now. It was close going into the anchor leg by Dara took control in her first 50 meters."
Cambridge actually had the lead in the race going into the last leg, but Edge took care of that and beat second-place Boston Latin by over a second.
Gulino also had a personal-best in the trials of the 300 (42.37), later taking sixth place. Edge took second in the hurdles, breaking her own school record as well as she ran an 8.56 in the trials. Edge also went 15-4 for ninth in the long jump and Theresa Pelletier took sixth in the two mile (11:53.67).
On the boys' side, Chris Gulino and Kyle Dragon finished ninth and 11th respectively in the 300, Dragon with a personal best 36.85 by four-tenths of a second. Justin Keefer, Dragon, Gulino and Jake Keefer later ran a 3:34.66 for sixth in the 4x400.
**At the Division 4 Meet, the
NORTON High girls' team shattered four records, scored 16 points and finished among the top 10 teams. Junior Caroline Allen rewrote her own Lancer record in the 300 with a third place finish time of 43.65 seconds.
Courtney Williams captured fourth place in the 55 meter dash in Lancer record time of 7.55 seconds, while freshman Paige Almeida was influential in two other standards for excellence. Almeida clocked a 1:46.04 Norton record time in the 600 and then ran a 1:02 third leg for the third place 4x400 relay team, which clocked a record setting time of 4:15.
The Lancer boys teams finished ninth overall with 14 points, senior Emerson Almeida leading the way with a third place finish in the 600 at 1:26.3, just a second and stride off the winning pace. He also anchored the second place 4x400 relay team with a 52.8 second split, a Lancer record-setting pace of 3:37.5.
