Rocketeers ready to grapple with Natick

NORTH ATTLEBORO - The North Attleboro High wrestling team is hoping that the fourth time will be a charm.
The Red Rocketeers will be vying for a shot at the MIAA Division 2 State team title when they take the mat tonight (7) against Natick High over at Pickering Gymnasium, North making the final four in the state for the fourth time.
Tonight's semifinal matchup figures to be a dandy, too, according to North coach Wayne Griffin.
"They have nine boys going to All-States and two champions," said Griffin. "They're traditionally strong in the lower weights and our strengths are in the middle and upper weights, so it should be a good matchup. We'll wait until weigh-in to see how things shake out and whether we need to juggle our lineup to plug some holes we've had the last couple of weeks."
North made it to the team State finals last year but was edged out by Greater Lawrence. Two years ago the Red Rocketeers were the top seed but lost to rival Franklin in the semifinals, Greater Lawrence eventually winning the title that year, too.
It's pretty much the same cast of characters in this year's final four as North hosts Natick tonight and Hockomock League champion Franklin hosts Central Catholic on Wednesday night (6:30). The two winners will face off in Marlboro next Tuesday.
Natick comes in having won the Division 2-Metro team championship, beating Arlington 49-24 then ripping Reading 54-12. North Attleboro won the South by beating Marshfield 40-28 then stopping Somerset 37-11.
Some of the must-see matches include the anticipated matchup between Mickey Taylor and John McElaney at 112 pounds. Taylor finished third in all of Division 2, including a win over McElaney last Saturday which relegated McElaney to fifth.
Also for North, Kyle Senechal (145 pounds) continues to be technically sound as he comes off of his runner-up finish at the Division 2 meet. He figures to get a battle from Mike Gibson, who was fifth in D2.
"Taylor and Senechal have been on hot streaks, those should be some matches," said Griffin.
North's coach also had high praise for Natick's Eric Davidson (130) and Travis Moran (160).
"The Moran kid is probably their best wrestler," Griffin said of the Division 2 champion. Davidson is also the D2 champion.
Other wrestlers to watch for North include Jesse Kummer (160), Josh Wainwright (215) and Ben Cross (189).
