Top Headlines Virginia Mary Burgess, 84 LYNNFIELD - Virginia Mary Burgess, 84, of Salem Street, Lynnfield, formerly a longtime resident of Bristol, R.I. and former resident of Attleboro, a loving mother, grandmother and sister, passed Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009 at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital in Wakefield. She was the beloved wife of the late Henry Konrad Burgess Jr., who died on June 6, 1970. Born Virginia Mary Bora in Attleboro on May 9, 1924, Virginia was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Clegg) Bora. She was raised and educated in Attleboro and was a graduate of Attleboro High School, Class of 1942. Mrs. Burgess resided 42 years in Bristol, R.I. where she truly enjoyed the town and Narragansett Bay. Virginia was a devoted wife and lovingly raised her five children and in later years was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Virginia is survived by two sons, Michael J. Burgess and his companion Anne Rogers of Attleboro, and Neil E. Burgess and his wife Maureen of Wakefield, Mass.; a daughter, Karen Rose and her husband Alfred of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Barbara Marshall of New Hampshire and Florida and Muriel Bergevine of Dennis; nine grandchildren: Jeffrey M. Burgess, Amy L. Houle, Heather Edge, Kristine Burgess, Ashley Burgess, Sean Burgess, Stacey Barnaby, Sheri Burgess and Brenda Burgess; 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Sadly, Mrs. Burgess lost her son, Patrick W. Burgess of Woonsocket, R.I. who died at home on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009. Virginia was also the mother of the late Henry K. Burgess III; sister of the late John Bora and grandmother of the late Scott Rose. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours for Virginia and Patrick on Sunday, Feb. 1 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck St., Attleboro. A funeral for Virginia and Patrick will be conducted on Monday, Feb. 2 at 9 a.m. from the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Ghost Church, 71 Linden St., Attleboro celebrated by the Rev. Manuel Pereira. Mrs. Burgess will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband Henry in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Dodgeville. Patrick will be laid to rest on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery of Massachusetts, Bourne. Burgess, 50, of Bernon Street, Woonsocket, R.I., formerly a longtime resident of Bristol, R.I., a loving father, grandfather and brother, passed unexpectedly on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009 at home. Born in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Oct. 7, 1958, Patrick was a son of the late Henry K. Burgess Jr. and Virginia Mary (Bora) Burgess, who sadly passed on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009 at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital in Melrose. Mr. Burgess was raised in Bristol, and was a graduate of East Providence Vocational High School. Patrick honorably served three years and seven months as a private first class in the U.S. Army, and was discharged on Nov. 1, 1985. He also served a total of 12 years in the Rhode Island National Guard, and was honorably discharged at the rank of specialist in March 2003. A longtime resident of Bristol, Patrick loved the ocean, built lobster traps and enjoyed digging for quahogs and clams. He recently enrolled in marine biology at the Community College of Rhode Island and anticipated studies this fall. Patrick is survived by a son, Sean Burgess of Malden; a daughter, Stacey Barnaby and her husband Chris of Stratford, Conn.; two grandchildren, Taylor Barnaby and Christian Barnaby; two brothers, Michael J. Burgess and his companion Anne Rogers of Attleboro, and Neil E. Burgess and his wife Maureen of Wakefield, Mass.; a sister, Karen Rose and her husband Alfred of Fayetteville, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews. Patrick was the beloved brother of the late Henry K. Gomes Sr. passed away in the comfort of his home on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009 surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Providence on April 17, he was the husband of Ramona Gomes, and the son of Bessie (Sarganis) Gomes. Norman was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean War, and was a former employee of the City of Providence until his retirement in 1994. He was previously employed at Advertising Engraving for many years. He was a member of the Public Employees Local 1033 Laborers Union for 30 years. He was inducted into the Fox Point Boys and Girls Club Alumni Association Hall of Fame, and was a champion basketball player. He was an avid sports enthusiast and was a fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants. He was also known to be an expert gin rummy player. Norman was the proud and devoted father of four: Richard Gomes of Massachusetts, Norman J. Gomes Jr. of Georgia, Jennifer D'Alessio of Maryland and Sabrina DeMeza of Florida. He also leaves behind three grandchildren: Brandon Gomes, Justin Gomes and Jonathan D'Alessio. He is also survived by three brothers: Alfred, Richard and Harold "Chubby" Gomes; three sisters: Georgianna Gomes, Diana Macomber and Nanci Sarganis; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Loretta Gomes. His funeral will begin Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 8:45 a.m. from the Rebello Funeral Home, 901 Broadway, East Providence, R.I., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Traverse Street, Providence. Rita D. Strycharz, 72 SEEKONK - Rita D. ( Kriegel) Strycharz, 72, formerly of Marion Street, Seekonk, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009 at the Southeastern Massachusetts Rehabilitation Center in New Bedford. She was the former wife of Joseph Strycharz of North Attleboro. She was born in Boston, a daughter of the late J. Leonard and Juliette ( Lavoie) Kriegel. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse, for many years at different hospitals and nursing homes for many years. She was a graduate of the Pondville Hospital Nursing School, Class of 1955. She has lived in Seekonk since 1970, coming from Attleboro. She was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church, Seekonk, enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, was an avid reader, and enjoyed being outdoors, doing gardening and planting flowers. She is survived by a son, David Strycharz of Rehoboth; four daughters: Dianne L. Kane of North Attleboro, Joanne R. Quirk of Rehoboth, Doreen A. Viara of Seekonk, and Julie A. St. Laurent of Seekonk; two brothers, Butch Love of Attleboro and Robert Love of Attleboro; a sister, Carol Petrasky; 14 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Ruth Love. Her funeral will be held Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 8:30 a.m. from the Foley-Hathaway Funeral Home, 126 South Main St., Attleboro, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Coyle Drive, Seekonk. Burial will follow in Oak Knoll Cemetery, Rehoboth. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours are Monday, Feb. 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. Roland L. Robert, 61 REHOBOTH - Roland L. Robert, 61, of Brook Street, Rehoboth died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009 at home. He was the husband of Susan (Archard) Robert. He was born in Woonsocket, R.I., a son of the late Lucien and Rita (Blanchette) Robert. He was the senior partner of the Prout, Robert, Elias Architect Company of Cranston, R.I., where he has worked since 1979. He had lived in Rehoboth since 1981, coming from Attleboro. He attended the Seekonk Congregational Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Seth J. Robert of Rehoboth; a daughter, Danielle Leah Robert of Rehoboth; two brothers, Normand Robert of Block Island, R.I. and Ronald Robert of Warwick, R.I.; three sisters: Luciene Calende of Warwick, Suzanne Michaud of Woonsocket and Rita Kenneally of Woonsocket; and many nieces and nephews. His memorial service will be held Monday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. in the Seekonk Congregational Church, 600 Fall River Ave., Seekonk. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
