Plainville asks union leaders to discuss budget with them

PLAINVILLE - Selectmen have invited union leaders to their meeting Monday night to discuss the town's financial situation.

Though an exact figure hasn't been reached, revenue for the impending fiscal year is estimated to be down more than $500,000 from last year and the budget deficit is an anticipated $1 million, with another override of the state's tax-limiting law, Proposition 2 1/2, highly unlikely.

The town originally faced a $1.2 million deficit last year, but closed the gap with a combination of cuts and a $650,000 override of the tax law.

In a letter to union leaders, Town Administrator Joseph Fernandes cited "unprecedented challenges both locally and nationally," and said that while there will be no effort to extract concessions, negotiate changes or otherwise circumvent the collective bargaining process at Monday night's meeting, it is an opportunity to share information about the town's financial climate.

The meeting with union leaders will take place at the senior center at 8 p.m.
