Thirty-two North Attleboro Middle School students could soon be able to boast that they are world record holders.
The students gathered in the middle school gymnasium at noon on Tuesday to participate in a nationwide attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most people playing four square at one time.
Four square is a four-person ball game played in a square divided into four quadrants. Using a kickball, students bounce the ball back and forth between the squares - anyone who misses, hits the ball out of turn or bounces the ball out of bounds is out and another student rotates into the square.
The Cartoon Network and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education put together the attempt to break the world record by staging at least 120 concurrent games of four-square. Each school needed to stage at least five games to participate.
"It's a way to promote more healthy physical activity," said John Dempsey, a physical education teacher at the middle school.
The world record attempt is part of the Cartoon Network's celebration of National Recess Week.
Ten of the schools participating in the contest will win a $10,000 grant. |
