Top Headlines "She's just so much stronger, her arms and her legs," related Mansfield High girls' track coach Derek Ellis of senior shot putter Emily McCabe, taken under the wing of Hornet throwing coach Steve Cameron. "She's really taken to the weight room" ... The other shot putter of renown is Seekonk High junior Krista Chauvin, who, under the guidance of veteran Warrior coach Frank Mooney, has bettered her own school record by two feet. "The thing about her is that she's positive, there's nothing negative," said Seekonk coach Kurt Tavares of her confidence ... Norton High freshman wrestler Brett Gallagher has established quite a resume at the 119-pound weight class thus far with a Division 3 South Sectional Tournament runner-up finish, second at the TVL, Middleboro and Canton tournaments and a 27-7 slate thus far. The Lancers head to the Division 3 Tournament at Taconic Regional in Pittsfield today and Saturday and one sleeper is 145-pound senior Joe Alberico, a first-year varsity member, who was behind Andrew Rockwell the past two seasons. "He's been terrific," said Norton coach Pat Coleman as Alberico has claimed 25 wins already ... "We have a shot to put four or five guys in the finals," related Foxboro High wrestling coach Jim Fraser of his Warriors' participation with Norton in the Division 3 Tournament. Charlie Grassia, the Warriors' 112-pound star, is seeded No. 1 ... Picture former PC Friar and current Minnesota Timberwolves player Ryan Gomes - big, rugged body, smooth style, great, soft hands, a court presence - and that's Mansfield High sophomore stud in the making, 6-foot-2 Michael Lofton ... The PC Friars, incidentally, are honoring former great Johnny Egan with a bobble-head doll Saturday at the Notre Dame game. What? I thought it was former Dighton-Rehoboth High and Elmira College great Johnny Egan, now the Friars' oh-so-suave marketing director ... "He established himself as a go-to sprinter," related Dighton-Rehoboth High track coach Mike Rubin of junior Tom Harrington, who won the 300 and anchored the first place 4x400 relay team at the SCC Meet "beating the best athlete in the league, Andre Medeiros of (Gr. New Bedford) Voke by one-tenth of a second" ... "He was tentative before, but now he's working his guy, getting position and he's not throwing up bad shots," said Seekonk High boys' hoop coach John McDonough of the late-season scoring surge by sharpshooter Ricky Silva ... With only one senior on her roster at Dover-Sherborn High, former Bishop Feehan High hoop star Missy Traversi was tabbed the Tri-Valley League's girls' basketball Coach of the Year and will be honored at the TVL All-Star game tonight ... "His hamstrings are so delicate, we're worried about him," said Mansfield High boys' track coach Julie Collins of senior speedster J.D. Chalifoux, entered into Sunday's MIAA Division 2 Championship Meet and also a member of the Hornets' 4x400 relay team ... The future looks good for Jon Pacheco's Dighton-Rehoboth High girls' hoop program as coaches Julie Goodman and Erin Duffy directed the Falcons to an unbeaten (15-0) season, behind the play of Suzie Newman, Alex Martin and Miranda Garcia ... King Philip High's track program has a very promising distance runner in freshman Chris Allen, the fourth-place finisher (the best rookie time in the state thus far at 4:37) at the Hockomock League meet in the mile run, a Warrior soccer player in the fall and sister of KP junior distance runner Elizabeth Allen ... Former North Attleboro High School heavyweight varsity wrestler Jared Gaw (aka "Buck Nasty") will be making his local pro wrestling debut Feb. 28 at the Franklin Elks Lodge on Pond St. Gaw has wrestled for the Top Rope Promotions Heavyweight and Inter State titles over the past two years around New England and New York. The bell rings at 7 p.m. ... Former Bishop Feehan High distance runner Meg Casey, a senior with the Brandeis University women's track team, was a member of the Jumbos' distance medley team which qualified for the NCAA Division III Meet ... At the MASCAC Championship Track Meet in Maine, former Foxboro High distance runner Marianne Mealey, a senior at Westfield State won the 3,000 meter title at 11:01. And at the same meet, former King Philip High Warrior, Ryan D'Arcangelo, a sophomore at Bridgewater State, won the 800 meter run at 1:59.7 ... Another former area track star, University of Virginia sophomore Ryan Collins via Mansfield High, captured third place in the 3-kilometer race with a personal-best time of 8:10 at the New York City-hosted, 12-team Virginia Dual Meet over the weekend ...
