Infant massage offered March 28 ATTLEBORO - Sturdy Memorial Hospital will offer a free infant massage program on Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to noon in the hospital auditorium. This program is designed for new mothers and their partners and will be led by Jean Stringham, Sturdy's infant massage coordinator. It will focus on the techniques and benefits of massage for infants. Tips on how to soothe and calm a colicky baby will also be provided. Parents are encouraged to bring their infants, age two weeks to 10 months. Class size is limited and registration is necessary. Bereavement program March 28 ATTLEBORO - Community VNA Hospice Care will host a children's bereavement program from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 28. Driver safety class for seniors offered ATTLEBORO - Sturdy Memorial Hospital will sponsor a free driver safety program from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, March 30 and Tuesday, March 31 at the hospital. The two-day program was developed by the AARP. Classes are taught by trained AARP instructors who assist motorists with driving skills. Participants will learn how to refine existing driving skills and develop safe, defensive driving techniques. Classes will also focus on the effects of aging and medication on driving, how to handle adverse driving conditions, traffic hazards, fuel saving tips and preventive measures that save lives. New Moms Group to start in April ATTLEBORO - Sturdy Memorial Hospital will host a free New Moms Group. New mothers - women with babies between the ages of 0 and 9 months - can talk about their growing babies, discuss concerns and expectations, learn different tips from other mothers in the group and more. Learn about scouting in April 4 open house ATTLEBORO - A scouting open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4 at All Saints Church, 121 North Main St. There will be numerous scouting displays set up throughout the day demonstrating first aid, tenting, knot tying, fire safety, cooking, orienteering, and other common scouting skills. A Pinewood Derby race track will also be set up to showcase some of the cars built by the Pack 25 Cub Scouts. Sturdy offers free prostate exams ATTLEBORO - Free prostate cancer exams, which include a PSA blood test and clinical exam, will be offered to men from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital. Dr. Raymond Paul-Blanc, a board certified urologist, will perform the screenings in the Oncology Suite, adjacent to the hospital's Emergency Care Center. The screening is recommended for males, age 50 or older, who have never had a prostate cancer screening before or have a family history of prostate cancer, as well as all men over age 55 who are at risk for developing prostate cancer. Higher-risk groups include African-American men and all men with first degree relatives (brother, father or son) who have prostate cancer. Exams are confidential and registration is limited. Heartsaver CPR: Saturday, April 25 from 8 a.m. to noon in Classroom 303. The course teaches lay rescuers how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for responsive adult, child and infant victims. Students also learn to recognize the warning signs of heart attack and stroke in adults, and breathing difficulties in children. Fee is $45, and includes a current text. SHINE program to train volunteers ATTLEBORO - Volunteers are being recruited for the Serving Health Information Needs of Elders Program, known as SHINE, in the greater Attleboro, Taunton and Fall River areas. Those who have four to eight hours a week and would like to help senior citizens understand health insurance coverage are sought. Some traveling may be required. SHINE counselors are trained and certified by the state. The next training dates are May 18, 20, 28, June 1, 3, 8, 12, 15, 17, 22, 25, and July 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All dates must be attended to successfully complete the training. SMARTS accepting summer registration ATTLEBORO - Registration is now being accepted for the 2009 SMARTS Summer Institute. The program provides students with an opportunity to study creative writing, dance, drama, film/video, instrumental, strings, vocal, and visual arts at three levels. The elementary program is for students in kindergarten to grades 3 and runs from July 6 to July 24. The junior program is for students in grades 3 to 8 and runs from July 6 to July 31. The senior drama and film program is for students in grades 7 to 12 and runs July 6 to July 31, and the senior dance and instrumental program runs from July 6 to July 17. All programs are held Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Brennan Middle School. Before and after care is available. Lions help library get large print books ATTLEBORO - The South Attleboro Village Lions Club, under the guidance of project chairwoman Bev Leedham, is continuing its tradition of providing large print books to the Attleboro Public Library. This year already, the club has donated several books, with more on order. Since 1989, the Village Lions have donated more than 300 large print books to the library in order to help those with vision impairments. Working hand in hand with the library, Leedham gets a list of books the library would like to have in large print, and looks to find these books through her source, the Doubleday Book Club. Depression support group meets weekly ATTLEBORO - DBSA (Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance) meets every Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hillside Adult Day Health Center at 50 Walton St., Attleboro.
