Mite B's win Rhode Island title

WOONSOCKET, R.I. - The Franklin Group Woonsocket North Star Mite B's triumphed over the Edgewood Hawks of Cranston to win the 2009 Rhode Island Amateur Hockey state championship title in the Mite B silver division.

The North Star B's collectively steamrolled all opponents they faced in the playoffs, beating West Bay 8-0, edging Edgewood 2-1 and shutting out CLCF 3-0 before the championship game, a 9-3 beating of Edgewood.

The B's set the tone in the championship, scoring just 2:43 after the opening faceoff. Jack Wilbur scored from Jack Georgeu to open the scoring, then three minutes later Nolan Boucher scored from Jack Walsh and Elise Curren to make it a 2-0 game.

They stretched their lead to four goals during a wild second period, outscoring Edgewood 4-2.

Early in the second it was Aidan Clarey scoring from Jack Halloran and Erika Rooney to make it 3-0, then Chase Tondreau scored from Bennett Hicks and Wilbur for the team's fourth goal. Exactly a minute after Edgewood got to within 4-1, the Stars answered as Boucher scored from Halloran and Clarey. The Stars had the answer again later in the period, crushing any comeback thoughts Edgewood might have had. After Edgewood had made it 5-2, Wilbur scored from Tondreau just 10 seconds later to make it a 6-2 game.

With 4:18 left in the game, North Attleboro's Jack Cullen scored from Boucher to make it 7-2. Hicks scored from Tondreau and Wilbur for the eighth B's goal, then Wilber scored from Alex Pratt and Georgeu to make it 9-2 with 19 seconds left in the game. Edgewood tacked on a goal with just six seconds left to play.
