TENNIS: AHS boys pick up first win




ATTLEBORO - Tim Flynn overcame a one-set deficit, winning a second-set tiebreaker to claim a key point at the No. 1 singles spot as the Attleboro High boys' tennis team downed New Bedford 5-0 Tuesday in a non-league match.

Flynn won the second-set tiebreaker 7-3, then didn't lose a game in the third set. In addition, Derek Goulet lost just one game in winning his No. 2 singles match for the Bombardiers (1-1).

"He was beating himself but he started concentrating on playing to his opponent's backhand side," Attleboro coach Russ Severs said of Flynn. Attleboro travels to Durfee on Saturday.

- At New Bedford, the ATTLEBORO girls' team suffered a 4-1 loss to the Whalers. Charlotte Germain and Nadia Lemus won their No. 2 doubles match for the Bombardiers (0-2) without losing a game.

- DIGHTON-REHOBOTH downed the SEEKONK boys 5-0 in a South Coast Conference match. Nate Fuller and Ricky Silva won straight set matches at the No. 1 and 2 singles spots for the Falcons. The D-R boys, 1-1, visit Wareham Thursday. - At DIGHTON-REHOBOTH, the SEEKONK girls' team (1-1) got past the Falcons (0-2) 4-1 in a marathon match. Seniors Vanessa Senecal and Aneesa Bey won three set matches respectively at the No. 1 and 3 singles spots, the latter overcoming a one-set deficit. Similarly, D-R's No. 1 doubles team of Kelsey Donaldson and Stephanie Rupp lost a first set tiebreaker 9-7, but won a second set tiebreaker 7-4, prevailing for the lone Falcon point in three sets.

- The FOXBORO boys' team won each match in straight sets for a 5-0 victory over Stoughton in a Hockomock League contest. No. 1 singles player Ben Young didn't lose a game in prevailing. The Warriors (1-1) are off until a match Monday at King Philip. The Foxboro girls also rolled to a 5-0 win over the Black Knights as freshman Alana Prinos set the tone in her first varsity match with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Samantha Kaplan. The Warriors (1-0) visit Dedham Thursday

- Jeremy Carroll, now playing second singles for the MANSFIELD boys after a season of teaming with Jordan Sandberg in doubles, outlasted Milton's Alex Guedouar in a marathon three-setter that finished off the Hornets' 5-0 non-league blanking of the Wildcats. The match went 3-6, 6-0 and 7-6, with Carroll prevailing in an 8-6 tiebreaker. Now 1-0, Mansfield visits Canton today.

The Hornet girls' team suffered a 5-0 loss to Canton in their season debut.
