ATTLEBORO - With runners on base through each of the first six innings and with senior righthander Brian Swanton allowing two hits through five innings on the pitching mound, the Foxboro High baseball team did enough to covet, perhaps, its best win of the season - an 8-5 verdict over Bishop Feehan Saturday at Beach Field.
The Warriors (4-4) scored pairs of runs in each of the first two innings off Shamrock sophomore southpaw Sean Flanagan - making his varsity - debut and then totaled three runs in the fourth inning, via a pair of walks, the third of three Shamrock infield errors and a two-run single off the bat of Swanton.
"That shows what we can do when we play together," beamed Foxboro coach Glen Conlon, whose Warriors were errorless in the field and stranded five Shamrock baserunners, including the bags jammed in the third inning, a runner at third in the seventh inning and the potential tying run in the batter's box.
Senior Matt Cote, batting in the No. 2 spot of the order for Foxboro, supplied three hits, while allowing just two baserunners over the final two innings in a relief pitching role for the Warriors.
"The errors always hurt, but the kids were a little down after losing (to Xaverian at the Weymouth Tournament)," offered Bishop Feehan coach Mark Cooke, whose Shamrocks suffered their second loss in as many days - after notching W's in their first seven outings.
The Shamrocks rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, via walks to Ryan Lee (two hits) and Matt Boulter (two walks) and wild pitches, tying the score. The Shamrocks closed the gap to 4-3 in the third as Swanton (six walks, one strikeout) issued a bases-loaded pass to Jim Marcotte.
But Swanton got out of that jam by fielding a ground ball for the final out, in addition to retiring the side in order in the second inning (on 10 pitches) and picking off a Shamrock runner at first base for the second out of the fifth inning.
Foxboro never lost the lead against Flanagan, who had assembled a 3-1 slate with the Shamrock junior varsity. Mike Farrell drew a walk and Cote doubled in the first inning, scoring respectively on Nick Thrasher's infield out and a booted ground ball off the bat of Seth Khourey.
The Warriors reclaimed the lead in the second inning, scoring two runs with two outs. Joe Clagg reached base on an infield error and scored on Farrell's RBI-double to left centerfield. Cote followed with an RBI-single into right field.
Walks to Clagg and Farrell set up another booted ground ball for Foxboro's fifth run, while Swanton followed with a two-run base hit by Swanton into center field. The Warriors created a four-run lead in the sixth when Cote singled into left field and scored on Thrasher's RBI-double to center field.
"That's a huge win for us," added Conlon, whose Warriors avenged a one-run loss to the Shamrocks. "We needed to prove that we can beat a good team and Feehan is, probably, the best team in the area. We're starting to come around."
The Shamrocks added single runs in the fourth and sixth frames. In the fourth, Nick Cataldo spanked a leadoff single and scored on a Lee ground ball. In the sixth, Andrew McCarty was hit by a pitch leading off the frame and scored on Joe Knaub's sacrifice flyball.
The Shamrocks remain at home for a non-league game with King Philip Monday, while the Warriors resume their Hockomock League slate with a contest at North Attleboro.
