NA student-scientists shine

10 of 15 competing at state science fair place
NORTH ATTLEBORO - North Attleboro High School students have once again cleaned up at the 60th annual State Science and Engineering Fair.

Fifteen North Attleboro High School students competed at the science fair, held earlier this month at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge and 10 of those students placed at the fair.

Among them was Mary Lou Hedberg for her project "Superior Extraction? Simplified SFE-CO2," which researched cost-effective ways to extract soy oil, which can be used for everything from cosmetics to biofuel. She also received the Naval award and the Novartis award for her work.

Four students from North Attleboro High School were among those who earned second-place awards.

Frank Cai received a second place award for his project exploring "Cryptochromes and Magnetic Fields." He also received the ImmunoGen Research Internship Award. Meghan McHugh received a second-place award for her project "Stopping the Spread: Finding a Deterrent of the Asian Longhorned Beetle."

Emily Tierney and Megan Hornsby received a second-place award for their team project "Natural Substances and their Effects on the Phototactic Behaviors of Drosophila melanogaster."

The school also had three third-place award winners.

Nicole Chahwan won a third-place award for her project "The Effects of Clover on Radish Plants." Chahwan was also awarded the American Society of Safety Engineers award.

Rachel Martin earned third place for her work "Exploring the Transmission and Applications of Wolbachia." She also was selected as the first alternate for a $20,000 scholarship to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she will be headed this fall to study microbiology.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Laura Malone for her project "Can You Help Me, Honey?" and Alyssa Fontaine and Lauren Hauer for their team project "Death Rays 2."

Other North High participants in the state science fair were Dana Brown, Georgette Boulton, Shannen Danahey, Delaney Smith and Alyssa Whitney.

In addition, Shweta Kitchloo was invited to participate in the fair, but declined in order to attend the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in Colorado on the same weekend.

" Sorry realist - the Craigslist rental scam, the pretty dead girl, and the Mansfield election were above the fold; federal cash and golf were below. This wasn't even in the top right corner - the Boston sports teams (Bruins and Celtics) and the magazine insert were.

If they were football players who had actually done their homework - THAT'S news! "
