BOYS' TENNIS: Eagles snare a share of Hockomock title

WRENTHAM - At least the Sharon High Eagles cannot claim outright possession of the Hockomock League boys' tennis championship.

The Eagles avenged a 3-2 loss to the previously unbeaten King Philip High Warriors earlier in the season, prevailing 3-2 Wednesday as No. 1 singles player Peter Kerr won the third set of his match for the decisive third team point.

Both the Warriors and Eagles finished the regular Hockomock League season at 15-1 to share the title.

Kerr, who lost a first set tiebreaker 7-5 to KP's Alex Huth on a double-fault, won the first two games of the second set to begin his comeback bid. Then Kerr won the first five games of the third set, with Huth having to retire due to leg cramps.

"He started with the cramps at 2-0 in the third set, then he just couldn't bend and completely collapsed," said KP coach Laurie Puddester of Huth, who suffered just his second loss of the season. "He was hitting the ball hard, he was coming into the net and finishing points," said Sharon coach Matt Freeman of Kerr, who staked a 2-0 and 4-1 second set lead to rally back.

KP's Caleb Fields avenged a straight set loss to Sharon's Jack Brody, taking a three-set match, while Alex Stalley and Jack Archibald won the second set of their No. 1 doubles match 6-0.

"It was a great match, we were just a little better today," added Freeman. KP (18-1 overall) has regular season finale match today, a non-leaguer at Ashland.

- NORTH ATTLEBORO (10-7) claimed a 3-2 decision over Mansfield at Memorial Park as the No. 1 doubles team of senior Kevin Mooiman and sophomore Charlie Sexton overcame a one-set deficit, taking the decisive third set of their match 6-1 for the decisive third team point. Mooiman and Sexton avenged a straight set loss earlier in the season. Jeremy Carroll and Craig Margolin won their Nos. 2 and 3 singles matches respectively for the Hornets, while senior Sanjeeva Chetty won a first set tiebreaker 7-5 as North won the No. 1 singles match. North visits Attleboro today, while Mansfield (6-11) concludes its season with a Hockomock League match against Canton.

- John Charest overcame a one-set deficit at the No.; 1 singles spot, taking the decisive third set of his match with BISHOP FEEHAN's Kyle Nyskohus as Somerset claimed a 3-2 victory. Chris Swick lost just one game in winning his No. 2 singles match for the MIAA Tournament-bound Shamrocks (8-6, 3-3) in their regular season finale.

- NORTON needs to win a non-league match at Taunton today in order to qualify for the MIAA Tournament. The Lancers fell to Hopkinton 3-2 in a Tri-Valley League match, with No. 2 singles player Pat Hillman winning a three-set match and No. 3 player Ravi Patel taking a first set tiebreaker 7-4.

- DIGHTON-REHOBOTH took a pair of matches from Bishop Connolly in non-league play, 5-0 and 4-1. The only difference came at first singles, where D-R's Nick Moniz and Connolly's Jasieo Correia split. Moniz winning 6-4 and 7-5 and Correia taking the nightcap, 6-2, 6-2. The Falcons (14-3) entertain Bourne on Friday.
