City school committee chairwoman won't seek seat on city council

ATTLEBORO - School board Chairwoman Robbie Wuilleumier, who was mulling a run for the Ward 2 council seat, has bowed out of that race.

While she said previously she'd like to serve the city in a broader capacity as a councilor, Wuilleumier announced that she's decided to seek re-election to the school board.

"The work that the committee has begun is too important to leave at this time," she said in a news release. "We have only just started our journey towards excellence and I'm not ready to give it up."

Wuilleumier has a long resume, including stints on the planning board, conservation commission, comprehensive plan committee and the open space and recreation committee.

She said she may consider a run for council in the future. Wuilleumier will seek her third term as an at-large member of the school committee.

Her withdrawal leaves six-term incumbent Ward 2 Councilor George Ross unopposed.

Candidates have until July 24 to take out nomination papers.

" I think you are failing to include inflation in your equation Kevin. Simply because enrollment has dropped does not mean costs drop by a proportionate amount.

I'm not backing the teacher's unions, I'm backing the need to improve our local schools to compete. Your attempt at humor regarding throwing money at a problem is noted, however, that is not what I am advocating. "

" Then spend DOUBLE the money, TRIPLE! Then we will be the best city ever!!

You are using faulty logic.

The education budget cannot be such a large part of the total budget. It's over 60% with over 80% of that going to
employee conpensation.
The teachers union use extortion every year....."Give us the money or the kids get it!"
Enrollment has gone down, so should the spending. "

" Education budgets should never be cut - that is the single most important area we need to focus on to compete statewide, across the nation and globally. Prior to the current recession, we finally saw improvements in education spending and resulting improvements in how our youth compete. This trend should continue and expand. This also benefits our city by attracting young, educated folks starting families and making the city more vibrant rather than a Brockton or Lowell. "

" Student enrollment is down. Cut the education budget, the increases every year are killing the city. "

" THIS is a major plus for the school department. Current committee is working well! without problems of previous years THEY SEEM to know that they should be about the business of educating our children. Kudos to Ms. Wuilleumier for her decision! "
