Top Headlines 'Frankenstein' visits Mixed Magic; PPAC turns 'Purple'
Misery's Fiend: Frankenstein" runs through this weekend at Mixed Magic Theatre, 171 Main St., Pawtucket. The play is adapted by Artistic Director Ricardo Pitts-Wiley from "Frankenstein" or "The Modern Prometheus," a novel by the British author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. Shelley started writing Frankenstein when she was 18 and finished when she was 19. It is often considered the first fully realized science fiction novel due to its pointed, if gruesome, focus on playing God by creating life from dead flesh. Tickets are $15 general; $10 students/seniors. (401-305-7333)The Providence Performing Arts Center will be holding "talkbacks" following the Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28 performances of "The Color Purple." Attendees are welcome to join cast members for a complimentary post-performance talkback to get special insights on the show. The May 27 talkback moderator will be Olayinka Y. Oredugba, attorney with the City of Providence overseeing the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity and the Minority & Women Owned Business Compliance Program, and the May 28 talkback moderator will be Beverly E. Ledbetter, vice president and general counsel, Brown University. The show runs May 26-31. (401-421-ARTS or www.ppacri.org) Perishable Theatre, which bills itself as Rhode Island's Research and Development Theatre, is accepting applications for new Resident Artists at Perishable Theatre, or RAPTors. RAPT is an artistic development program created by Perishable Artistic Director Vanessa Gilbert that aims to support new performance work generated by mid-career Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts artists. All RAPT applications must be post-marked or hand-delivered by 6 p.m. on June 8, as a new wave of residencies is slated to begin in July 2009.
